Purple Finch, Acrylics, 5" x 7"

The fifth painting in my little birds series (of little paintings!). The purple background probably entered my subconscious because it's Easter weekend, hehe. I love the colours on these little guys. This one was scouting my grandparents' bird feeder, probably waiting for me to leave the area.

I used to get really confused between the purple finch and house finch.. until I saw a purple finch. Then I realized that all the previous ones that I saw were house finches!

I just noticed that all my five paintings in this series have birds facing left. I'm wondering if I should continue that trend for the sixth or break the pattern and rebel with a right facing bird. Mmmm, decisions, decisions.

Nice job on the finch. Maybe a dead on would be a nice challenge next although it wouldn't make a nice painting maybe...I guess we have a similar set of birds in our area. I've just started a varied thrush which came before the snow was gone...I hope to do several birds also moving into the summer season.

jonc50, oooh, a varied thrush! They are beautiful. I have yet to see one here yet, but I know they're around! I might take you up on the dead on one (maybe for my 7th - I have my 6th lined up already!). Thanks for the comments :)

Thank you Christel! :)

Lovely bird, great work on the feathers and feet. The purple background works well. :)

How pretty this is! I've been seeing these on my feeder lately, and find them so beautiful. Well done!

Lovely little thing. If I may suggest, I'd tone down the white on his rump. It'd be a bit more shaded in life, no? Those little legs are so lifelike, and the bark is really believable.

Thank you Kay M and Jenna!

Phrangue, yes, thanks for the advice. The original painting is not that white, it came out more white in the picture than in real life. There's just a touch of pure titanium white around the edges where there is some backlighting.

Nice work Kathy. Apart from the charming little bird, you have done a super job on the bark of the tree.

I've seen a few purple finches but they aren't regular visitors this far north; but I keep my trusty camera handy just in case.

jonc50, I haven't seen any here in BC yet. I saw them once in a while in Quebec, year-round. My reference photo was actually taken in the winter in a town further north than Quebec City.

I haven't seen your previous paintings in this series (being new to posting here), but this little bird is beautiful. Your purple background works perfectly with his beautiful red feathers, and I love how you've painted the branch and feathers. The whole series must look great together.
