This summer, we visited relatives on San Juan Island, Washington. We sailed with them to Echo Bay. There were so many other sailboats anchored there. I photographed a number of boats late in the afternoon because the winds had calmed enough to present perfect reflections. Not mirror images of the boats, but slightly disrupted reflections. I was also drawn to the dramatic lighting of the boat against the green foliage on the shore. This is a very different subject for me. I hope there are no sailors out there to judge my interpretation of the rigging.
This is approximately 11 X 14 on La Carte paper. Thank goodness for TL darks. I also used some Dick Blick half sticks and for the final touches, I used a few half stick Senneliers. C&C always welcome.

This is really nice, Karen! Such a peaceful mood you've created with the solitary boat. The reflections look great and I wouldn't know if one of those rigging ropes was out of place. You've suggested them beautifully.

Karen. Striking painting! You did an excellent job. (Those islands are a favorite place of mine.)

Just what I would expect...GORGEOUS!
Your deep shadows are dense but not boring...did you use a variety of dark, darks?

Thank you, Jay. You are fortunate to live in such a beautiful place. At times the "eye candy" was overwhelming. Whales, islands, ocean, mountains, etc, etc. Wonderful. Insprational.
Leslie, I thank you as well. The deep greens and blues are from the Terry Ludwig Intense Dark II box. The dark greens, and some are not showing up in the photo, are the medium to dark greens in the new set of 1/2 sticks of Dick Blick.

Thank you, Gerald and Esther. This painting has been in two shows in the past month. I often hear, "That isn't a painting, it's a photo." That comment leads to my explaining pastels, a medium many people have never seen in a show. If they have heard of pastels, they think pastel means pastel colors. I just know that painting realistically gives me great joy, and that's what creating art is all about.

Karen, Lovely! The symmetry of the work, broken by short lines, brings this atmosphere of peace. :-)

Wow I am so impressed about this painting!!
The contrast is so perfect! The sky fading and the far away hill are so well balanced by the darks! It is truly a great painting.

Thank you Chapa and Michael! We were on a sailing trip with my husband's cousins. I probably took 30 photos during the day we were at anchor, trying to capture just the perfect balance of light as well as the position of the anchored boats as the wind changed.
