View Full Version : April Feather Fur, & Scales Challenge

04-01-2017, 01:45 AM
Welcome to the April Fur, Feathers and Scales Challenge.

I've chosen to use animals native to Florida, where my husband & I retired to last year. Some are my photos, a couple were taken by friends, and a few are public domain. Use as they are or crop as you desire, and render in your choice of medium.

IT IS SO MUCH MORE FUN WHEN EVERYONE UPLOADS AT MORE OR LESS THE SAME TIME................................................................................

Florida Panther -in the news last week- A female and her kittens were spotted north of the Caloosahatchee River for the first time in nearly 45 years! We live just south of the river)

Next, Key Deer, found only in the Florida Keys. They're very tiny, and, obviously, very cute! (apologies about the graininess of the pic). The whole population is battling against a horrible screw-worm infestation that occurred last year. Many deer were lost, and only time will tell if its been eradicated.

I teach painting at an art gallery in Matlacha, where plenty of pelicans cruise up & down the inlet behind the gallery. Very entertaining!

I took this picture of an osprey who just caught lunch on Sanibel Island.

A local resident took this pic of Cape Coral's Burrowing Owls. They dig nesting burrows in yards & make nests in drainpipes. This pair are watching for hawks before letting their chicks above ground!

My friend Karen took this awesome pic of a Great Blue heron in flight - what a great shot!

This Gopher tortoise walked up our driveway one day. (we placed him back in the woods across the street) Our neighbor told us they are protected. If one decides to live in your yard, you are not allowed to move it without a permit! They're Florida's only native tortoise.

And last, one of Florida's best -known natives, the American Alligator. We have not seen any in our neighborhood, but they do live in many of the local ponds (and golf courses, lol)

I hope you enjoyed meeting some of the local wildlife!

Beautiful slection of photos, thanks for hosting! I can't promise I'll be able to take part this month, I'm on the middle of a big commission as well as preparing to move house, but I'll try. I wouldn't know which one to pick though, they are all jumping out at me!

I still haven't finished January's challenge ... Or March's :(

04-01-2017, 08:32 AM
Great references to choose from. Thanks for hosting, Pat.

04-01-2017, 11:35 AM
Ohmygoodness! So much local wildlife!

04-01-2017, 12:41 PM
Wow Pat, such great ones from which to choose. Thanks for sharing and hosting!

04-01-2017, 04:30 PM
Thank you, Pat. Some lovely subjects. The big cat is beautiful and I like the heron.

04-01-2017, 06:24 PM
Great choices, Pat. Like Penny, I am favoring the panther and the heron.

BTW, I always wanted to visit Sanibel Island and the Darling reserve. Sometime I will PM you about that. Now, I just hope I can finish something by the end of the month!

04-01-2017, 09:19 PM
Great Photos!
I probably won't have time to do any but I did want to tell you they are awesome shots!

04-02-2017, 07:16 AM
That cougar is so lovely with the light and shadow. I really want to try that one!

Wonderful references Pat. I wonder which one will be the star of the show. Thanks so much for hosting.

Yes Pat, thank you so much for the wonderful references this month. They are all great which makes it so,difficult to choose which one to do first, so I dove right in and added the Key doe and fawn to my sketchbook last night. I will likely do the panther next and will do It on a large scale as far as my watercolors go. Probably a full sheet portrait on Esparto grass paper just to keep my brushes busy.. My sister and her family live right down in Everglades City in Florida as well. The pelicans are their dock pets and they run an airboat concession on 1400 acres of Collier land that they have an exclusive lease on from the Collier family. They are Speedy and Margaret Johnson and the concession is Speedy Johnson's airboat tours. Her daughter Amanda and son in law Freddy currently run the concession and Margaret spends her days baking cakes and cookies for special occasions as a fund raiser for various charities in the area. The Johnson Family have lived there for generations and if you get down that way drop in and tell Margaret and Amanda that her Sister Deborah says hello! Take an airboat ride into the glades as this time of year things should be pretty busy in terms of the amount of birds and other wildlife you will see.

04-03-2017, 12:03 PM
Lovely Pics Pat, I'm one week for my 3 weeks holidays, so, I'll try something in the move :)

04-03-2017, 09:04 PM
So glad you are all liking them!

Deborah, thanks for the family info - I would love to go down & take my hubby for an airboat ride! Maybe next time we have family visiting. I went several years ago & it was really interesting & a lot of fun! The everglades is a fascinating place. In fact, I'm going with the Art League to the Everglades Botanical Park later this week!

My Auntie even wanted to go on the airboat - she was in her late 90's - what a trooper! My cousin & I kept her squished between us so she wouldn't go overboard on those fast turns, lol!

04-04-2017, 04:24 PM
Some lovely photos to choose from, thank you !

Some lovely photo's to choose from, thank you !

04-05-2017, 04:36 AM
Hi Pat,

Thanks for the super references, although I don't know that I would like so much wild life around. No alligators, or Panthers around here.

I think I'm tempted by the Panther and the Heron, but we'll see what happens.

04-09-2017, 04:18 PM
Great photos, I'm looking forward to this challenge, as I haven't been involved lately... The turtle really fascinates me!

Have begun mine....going ok at the moment...mind you I've still got time to mess it up. Fingers crossed it won't happen this time! :crossfingers:

I've been updating the Animal & Wildlife Challenge Hosting Schedule;
We've got fedetony down for May
Chammi I've put you in for November (sorry about the delay in updating)
and Penny I've slotted you and Lesley to Co-Host in June, is that still ok?

So we still have 2 months left empty - September and December....anyone interested in Hosting the Challenge in either of those months? It's not a hard job and it's really interesting, and a lot of fun, to see what members make of your photos.
Anyone who hasn't hosted before can always PM me to ask about Hosting at anytime.

04-12-2017, 08:51 AM
Yes, Viv, thanks.

Gorgeous reference Pat wish I had more free time

04-19-2017, 08:12 AM
Hello everyone! Well, the 20th is almost here!
Hope you are all making good progress.

I finally got mine started, needless to say it won't be ready for a few more days. Not that I haven't been busy ... I've spent the last month completing a door panel for our kids room at church that features over 20 Florida animals to welcome the little ones each Sunday. (I'm going to post it on a separate thread)

But I am excited to see what you all have done! Paint on!

Thanks Kay, Pat and Christel!
Christel, for some reason you and I ALWAYS seem to pick the same reference! Lovely work from you on the Florida Panther!

04-20-2017, 07:11 AM
Lovely panthers, Viv and Christel. Great to see the different media used.

Mine is in pastels

And the heron is watercolour.

04-20-2017, 07:57 AM
Beautiful work on the panther Viv, Christel and Penny! And Penny I love the feathers on your heron :)

It seems the panther was popular because it's also what I did. I decided to try something a bit funkier than usual. It's in Pitt Artist pens on Canson 9x12 Recycled Bristol Board.

04-20-2017, 08:47 AM
Here is my contribution for this months Challenge . i thought I would stick to water colour to try and get some practice in:)

04-20-2017, 09:23 AM
Thanks for the lovely comments.
Penny- lovely panther and the heron is cool
Virginie - love your funky version!
Lesley - very nice! I like the palette you used.

04-20-2017, 10:34 AM
Viv - that panther has such soft fur :)

Christel - oooh two panthers - the eyes in the colored version look so intense. Oh wait same with the ink version. Oh wait it's the same one just with colour. That explains why the cats are so similar :)

Penny - ooh another big cat. Well done on the heron in flight!

Virginie - ooh this is so funky. Could almost be a blue glass sculpture

Lesley - love the nose on your panther. Well done on the bird. That pose/position is not easy.

04-20-2017, 11:14 AM
Here is my attempt at the heron, in coloured pencil.

04-20-2017, 11:25 AM
Very cool, Virginie. I really like the style.

04-20-2017, 11:27 AM
Lovely colours, Lesley. Well done!

Another cool heron, Geoff. I like the colouring.

04-20-2017, 11:45 AM
Beautiful contributions so far, well done everyone! I too went with the panther and the heron, both in graphite on cartridge paper. I flipped the panther over because I thought it would be easier to draw that way.

What an influx of panthers and herons LOL

Nice jobs, far too many to post to each one: Viv, Christel, Penny, Virginie, Lesley, Pam, Geoff. The watercolour ones are remarkable.

Well, to add to the panther, here is mine in pencil, size 6x8":

The borrowing owl, pencil, size 6x8":

04-20-2017, 12:45 PM
Wow, the panther certainly has been a popular subject and I'm no exception lol.

Beautiful work be everyone.

Here's my rendition in pastels, mainly pencils and pans.

Nice graphite work Pam. The heron is wonderful.

Well done Fana cute owls.

Lucy your panther is absolutely stunning. Love the colours.

04-20-2017, 03:00 PM
Pam, Fana and Lucy - I likemthem all. So individual. Lovely colours on the panther, and the heron seems airy and floating. Really nice to see the owl!

04-20-2017, 08:30 PM
Gorgeous animals posted thus far, bravo to all  BBL to comment on each if time permits. Only this afternoon I began the panther on a discarded book page. I liked the chapter title so used that for him, Chasing Darkness, which seemed appropriate. Size is 7.25x5, Micron 01 pen/watercolor.

04-20-2017, 08:52 PM
Oooh more critters!

Geoff - yay you found the time. That bird looks so dignified :)

Pam - gorgeous graphite work. Great eyes on the panther and love the wisp off the back of the heron's head.

Fana - all your animals seem so vigilant watching what's approaching from all angles :)

Lucyloo - stunning! Gasp!

Kay - such soulful eyes :)

Now this is not to the standard of the work thus far but I'll post it anyways.

I'm sorry I've not taken part this time, life got in the way. Perhaps I'll revisit this month in the future and paint that fabulous panther, your work is so inspiring. Well done all :)

Well, here's my Key deer submission for this month. I sketched it in my Nujabi watercolor sketchbook which is produced using a centuries old paper manufacturing technique which is made from 100% cotton rag handmade paper that is handcrafted in India. It is around 280 gsm. 8 1/2 x 11 inches. The paint is hand Mixed Pearl Ex iridescent watercolor pigments and Micro glitter purchased on Ebay from a vendor in China. I Consider these pages to be multi media artwork. I am still a few pages away from filling my first Nujabi Watercolor journal..

Thank you Kay. 😊

04-23-2017, 09:53 PM
Wow - such stunning work by all!

I'm not calling it finished yet, but pausing for a bit before making any more changes (considering detailing the clouds on the right side a bit more)
Acrylic on gallery-wrapped 2" depth canvas. 20"x10"

And, I'll introduce a new artist- my husband, JoJoe. He's been sitting in on my classes for 4 years now, and has become quite adept with the palette knife! Here's his take on the Florida Panther, acrylic on 9x12 canvas. (He calls its a collaboration, but I only helped a little on the eyes & nose).

04-23-2017, 10:18 PM
I am really enjoying seeing everyone's work this month!

Viv, already mentioned how much I love your pan pastel panther- its so rich & velvety!

Tuscanny, so interesting to see the sketch and the final version - those eyes are beautiful!

Penny - well done - they're both very nice pieces.

Virginie, guess your panther was feeling blue, LOL! Nice sketch!

Leslie, I like the looseness of the heron & panther, they look very fluid.

Geoff, nice colored pencil rendition of the heron - its such a magnificent bird, isn't it? Did you use some watercolor in the background at the bottom,

Pam, beautiful pencil sketches - I especially like the heron. Lots of feathers in those wings - you've detailed them nicely.

Fana, nice detail on the panther's eyes. Love the burrowing owls, too.

Lucyloo - beautiful! Love your color choices, and handling of the pastels. I'm envious of your skill!

Kay, another stunning work on an old book page! LOVE the eyes - they're focused so intently! Great title too.

EP - I like the 2-color scheme to your little painting. Go, Panther!

Deborah - wow, I really love your watercolors. The colors are so deep and
rich! The deer are beautiful!

Damian - glad you joined us this month - your Panther is superb! Beautiful lighting and dramatic effect!

Sorry I didn't express myself as well as I could. Usually Vivien makes a lovely gallery near the end of the month, and sometimes a few days before. Waiting until the 30th to post would be too late (for the gallery). I'll have to paint faster, as if I don't make it in time, it will be my fault!

Shirley - great work on the egret. You have achieved a lovely texture on the feathers, and I love the strong background colours.

Whew, I finally made a challenge by the end of the month! (Although this may need a few more tweaks. Adding detail w/o it looking overdone is a challenge for me.) This is an 8 x 10 watercolor on Arches 300 lb rough, as I had a sample piece stowed away for years. Since it was a Florida panther, I punched up the colors to be more tropical. The yellows never seem to show as brightly as painted in the photo.

The other works are really inspiring; I hope to be able to comment on them individually in the next few days.

Pat, thanks for the wonderful photos and for hosting! :cat:

I still want to paint that panther! There are so many good ones this month I will likely defer it to a later date when I can be more objective about it! Be advised that all of your panthers are lovely and stand well on their own merit! Keep at it and just remember that every one of us have a different view of the subject and though they may not be exact photographic representations, they are all the result of a lot of hard work and observation! Good works, one and all!

04-29-2017, 08:34 AM
Uff, I'm alive! And on time for once! :) Watercolors on Fabriano artistico, ACEO size (2,5" x 3,5"). I expected to see a lot more paintings/drawings of this fella this month, but it seems like kitty took all the fame! :D

Inspired by the work here and the smug alligator in particular I had further session on my big cat. I smoothed out the hard edges of blue, then added a reddish inktense pencil, a green inktense pencil, and finally a few swipes with my watercolour marker.

The light on the egret is astounding! Love this one, Shirley!
Your panther just glows from the eyes to background and back, Joy!
Petra, this guy is mean and a lean killing machine. Super!
Pat, your heron rocks! Love the hues.
EP, your panther looks ready to pounce, great rendition.

Here's your April Gallery
Wonderful entries from everyone and I'm sorry I haven't had time to comment individually, but I did have a really good look at all the entries as I was making the Gallery. Well done to you all - 25 entries this month - and many thanks to Bluemoonstar/Pat for Hosting this April Feathers, Fur & Scales Challenge.
