 These are 8 x 10, on Arches 140CP. The one with the darker BG was done for the Feb. monthly challenge. (Ref photo posted. I flipped it so one could "read" left to right.) I did a second version on my own.

They both seem more color saturated and the yellows are more prevalent than in the photos.

C & C greatly appreciated. Which one is "better", and why?

Both are lovely, Joy. I do like the first one more, though as it's more finished with the completed background. The second background forma a halo around the grasshopper. I also like the light catching the edges of the first one.

They're both good but I agree with Christel, the first one looks more complete and has more depth to it. I think I find the soft edges all around the second one a little distracting. I love the luminosity of the wings.

What an interesting subject. Both paintings are beautifully done.

Both are lovely and the greens are superb. The first one gets my vote. I like the blue shades which contrast well with the yellowish green and the orange in the 'tail'!

Both are nice but I like #1 a bit better. Both well done.

:grouphug: Thank you all so much for taking time to look and comment! The reason I let some color bleed around the periphery of the subject on the second version is that I did not want to have a cartoonish, "pasted on" look. Also, I thought it would be "easier" not paint a BG, as I always struggle with that.

That said, I like the first version better, also!

Great grasshoppers, Joy, and I remember this ref. Both versions are remarkable and your skill is excellent. My preference is the first one and the bg is really well done. Second has more of a botanical feel to it if that is the right term.

These are beautiful I have to say that I like the first one a bit better, however, both are nice.

Both are really lovely but I have to disagree with everyone and say I prefer the second one best. I love the background you did on the first one but I prefer the brighter look to the grasshopper in the second. He seems to pop more :)

That's funny Pam, as I prefer the second one also. And we seem to be the only 2 members who do.
They are both lovely Joy, but the way you've rendered the watercolor on the back & wings of the second painting, gives it the illusion of his wings gently moving as he pauses for a few seconds, and I like that!

Thanks, Pam and Viv, as i wanted the second version to be brighter and have a "glow". Much thanks for taking the time to look and comment!
