This was a commission for a workmate. I used pastel blocks for the under painting and pastel pencil for detail. Thank you for looking and especially if you leave C&C. Bob

Terrific painting of the bulldog Bobby. Love the bulging eyes. I am sure your colleague loved it.

Beautiful work, Bobby. Maybe try a square format?

Thank you very much Lisa, Fedetony, Kay and Lucyloo for your kind comments.
Thank you Chammi. Apparently there is a condition that some bulldogs get that causes the eyes to bulge and go off center. Bubba's left eye is afflicted. My workmate loved the painting.
Thank you Christel. By square are you suggesting I crop down the area above his head or increase the width to include more of the body. I can do neither on this particular painting because its been given to the customer but I like the idea of reducing the background above the subject. My concept/composition for the painting was to make the dog a very strong presence, so that is why I ran him of the page. Lowing the background and making the format square would enhance that idea. Thank you for the suggestion.

Beautiful work!
What paper did you use?

Thank you Laurie. I use Clairefontaine Pastelmat Card in Dark Gray color for my pet portraits and human portraits. It will handle a lot of layers of pastel.

Wow! You have captured the different textures very nicely.

Thank you Karen, the folds in the skin and how it affected the fur was a challenge.

Bobby, this is a stunning portrait. I have always admired your work from the first time I saw the black and white portrait you did of the beagle drinking water from the faucet.

The eye condition that bull dogs can be prone to is called "cherry eye". They can be such characters and you have captured his look so well. Love the curl of the tongue!

Thank you Cat, that is a very nice thing for you to say.

Now I know the name of the eye condition, thank you. According to his owner, the tongue curl is one of the traits of the bulldog family and related breeds.
