Thanks for hosting, Anne, and the great selection of refs! I've been looking at some Alice Neel paintings and drawings recently, which inspired me to try the portrait. This doesn't look like a Neel (not that I was trying to imitate her), nor much like the young man in the photo, but I enjoyed painting it. Acrylics, 12"x12", and took about 3 hours.
Definitely free hand, but I always work that way (which is why I always have lots of inaccuracies!).
Nice work Holly. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Nice skin tones and feeling of light.

I like the direct approach and the bold composition where the curves of the clothing contrast with the lines of the wall.. This grabs the attention of the viewer.

Wow - yes - so good! It almost looks like pastel strokes. What a fine portrait!! I have to go look at Alice Neel works. I would Love to be able to do this with acrylics!!
