View Full Version : My first Commission!!!!

This portrait is about 85% finished. I need a few tweaks on the face and paws and to add some background color. The client really likes it. I did this with mostly pastel pencils with some Giraults on Canson Mi-teintes in Lilac. I was a bit hesitant to accept this commission, as the client indicated to me that this sweet little puppy was actually now almost 14 and in failing health. They wanted to memorialize her in pastel. Nothing like pressure! I am actually quite pleased with how it is coming along and she said I captured the dog's sweet expression(which always suprises me when I try animal portraits). Sorry that the photo is not that clear, it was taken with my phone in the evening

So adorable, and you have captured a personality. The only suggestion would be to check your photo for the high lights in the eyes. It appears there is one in the one on the left and two in the eye on the right. Hopefully your background will be simple and not detract from his cuteness.

Thank you all for your lovely comments and encouragement, and for pointing out the issue with the highlights in the eyes. I will have to correct that when I do the finishing touches. The client has requested a soft, butter yellow background, which is the color of the walls in her living room, which I think will go nicely with little Glory. Just by posting on Facebook and sharing this grainy photo with a few co-workers, I now have two more commissions...after struggling with landscapes for the past few years, I think I may have just found my stride!

Pet owners are very appreciative!
FYI - if you intend to pursue pet commissions, consider switching to Canson Touch paper. You will get superior results with same effort :)
