View Full Version : Lila the Great Dane

Hi everyone,

Here is my latest drawing. I was commissioned to draw this beautiful dog, Lila. Sadly, she has passed away, and the family wanted a portrait to remember her by. I was blessed to get such a beautiful photo for reference, and thoroughly enjoyed drawing Lila. I was on a short deadline, so managed to get this finished in just over a month. It is 8x10 inches, drawn with Sakura Pigma Micron pens of sizes 005 and 01. It's done on Strathmore 500 series Bristol Plate paper.

One of my favorite tools in my pen and ink drawing supply is an old, very nearly dried out 005 pen. Its ink comes out so thin and scratchy that I can really use that to benefit a drawing. For example, I used this worn-out pen for the collar with a cross hatching technique. It would have been a struggle to get that suggestion of gray tones with a heavier-flowing pen.

C&C welcome. I'll spray it in a day or so before sending it off to my client. Thanks for looking!

A few close-ups.

Wonderful. Love it that she's in pen and ink, which is such a challenging medium. You must be very proud of this work.

I just haven't taken the time to do anything in pen, but looking at your piece again sure has inspired me to dust them off. I enjoy pen as much as any other medium I work in, but some how just forgot about them.
