Cute critters!

03-01-2017, 03:30 AM
Thank you, I can't make up my mind, either!😊

Fantastic ones, Penny, I see several very interesting possibilities.

03-01-2017, 10:14 AM
Very cute! Not sure yet which one I'll choose!

03-01-2017, 11:14 AM
Very Nice references Kay :)... Thanks

Virginia and fedetony - thank you. (fedetony - the photos are mine, not Kay's) 😁

03-01-2017, 01:48 PM
Like the pics Penny but have to choose. Nice lot of texture on the toad and sheep, Alpacas will be a challenge due to lighting but dog is beautiful and the goose, so much choice. Thank you :)

03-01-2017, 02:08 PM
Thanks, Wendy - good luck. I thought I might paint a small part of the alpacas' photo, rather than the whole scene, but haven't made up my mind yet. I'm leaning towards the goose!

03-01-2017, 02:42 PM
Lovely pictures Penny, thank you! I'm trying to decide between three of them :)

03-01-2017, 02:56 PM
😁 thanks, Kay.

It's exciting, waiting for everyone's work. The 20th seems a long way off!

03-03-2017, 04:38 AM

Seeing the picture of Ziggy brings back lots of dog walking memories

It looks at if he is ready for a walk.

Love the selection.

03-03-2017, 06:05 AM
Thanks, Lesley. Yes, memories!

03-06-2017, 01:10 PM
Thanks, Geoff - you are so good at birds! He is certainly handsome. Ziggy was my whippet - no longer with us, I'm afraid. A lovely boy.
Ziggy it is then, although I am in the middle of a large project at the mo, I'll try to fit it in.

03-06-2017, 01:49 PM
No hassle, Geoff! Only if you have time!😎

03-11-2017, 03:21 PM

03-11-2017, 03:30 PM
Wheee! I'm done! Now to wait a week ....

03-11-2017, 04:51 PM
Thank you, Pat. He was a lovely boy, like most whippets. 🐾🐾

Yes, E.P.! I find it exciting each time it draws near to seeing everyone's work, more so this time as I provided the photos. Mine are ready, too!

Nothing yet has been done to prepare and due date is Monday coming up! Best start today.

03-15-2017, 02:24 PM
You need a swift brush, Kay!

03-15-2017, 06:19 PM
It was a bit of a rush, but Ziggy is done, just got to wait until the 20th.

03-15-2017, 06:22 PM
Excellent, Geoff. Not long now! 😀

03-16-2017, 07:14 PM

Mine is finished...wheww...whewww!
So Ive scanned it into my files and Im ready to post on Moday! Im always aware that New Zealand sees the light of a new day before every other country in the world....so Ive got mine finished to post on Monday. Huff puff....huff puff!

03-17-2017, 04:59 AM
I really need to finish mine today or tomorrow as I'm busy on Sunday preparing for a commission and I think I'm away next week. I made a start yesterday, quite pleased with it so far.

03-17-2017, 05:03 AM
Looks like Kay's got that swift brush.

I'm ready 2nd attempt

03-17-2017, 04:48 PM
👍😎 Roll on the 20th!

03-18-2017, 01:01 AM
Just sketched it out today- my first weekend off, so maybe it WILL get done!

03-18-2017, 11:46 AM
I hope so, Pat.😊

03-19-2017, 08:40 PM
I'm sad to say mine won't be finished on time .... again... I had a week off work but we've been house hunting and today I took delivery of a fibreglass animal sculpture to paint for a public art trail, so I've been preparing for that, and tomorrow I'm away for a week! I'll happily share a progress picture though on the 20th!

Here's my goose in watercolour 9"x9"

The colours get lost when I post. It's not quite so wishy washy.

03-20-2017, 03:40 AM
Actually looks ok on my phone so it must be the computer

03-20-2017, 04:08 AM
Well, Here is my attempt at Ziggy. It's done in Coloured pencil on strathmore paper.

03-20-2017, 04:21 AM
Ziggy is beautiful, Geoff. You've captured him so well. Thank you!

03-20-2017, 04:23 AM
This is Lesley's sheep. She was having problems posting, so have done it for her.I would be grateful if you could show it's from her. Thanks.

03-20-2017, 04:24 AM
Great sheep, Lesley. I like that you've painted the handler. Well done!

03-20-2017, 04:36 AM
Lovely Lesley. I loved that sheep but was intimidated by the coat. You did it

03-20-2017, 04:56 AM
It's wonderfull how the different mediums are contrasted here, I particularly like the geese by Vivien and Wendy, the contrast between the smooth pastels, and the dry brush technique of the watercolour. also the contrast between Penny's Pastels, and my Coloured pencils to give a different representation of Ziggy. I think Penny got the colours of Ziggy's coat closer than the coloured pencil, but that is only my opinion. I'm busy preparing to take my paintings to our art society exhibition, lets see how coloured pencil stands up there.

03-20-2017, 07:08 AM
Yes, Wendy, Lesley has painted the coat very well.

03-20-2017, 07:09 AM
Geoff - Good luck with your art exhibition! I think your use of coloured pencils is excellent.

03-20-2017, 07:38 AM

I love all the pictures. The pastels of Ziggy are beautiful, when I have more time I will have ago.

The rabbits look as if you can pick them up and cuddle them.

Just wish I had more time to spend on my art

03-20-2017, 08:16 AM
A gorgeous watercolour rabbit, Kay. Love the colours.

Thanks, Lesley. Never mind, once you retire you will have more time. 😎 Hope you do get to paint Zig.

Khin, love your dog in CPs and owl in wc. Impressive detail in all the right places.

I purchased the Sketchbooks at Jerry's artarama store online on sale for around $20 The paper isn't heavily sized and paint tends to stay exactly where you put it so you need to get it right the first time as things don't lift off of it very well. That aside, it has a wonderful rough surface texture and character. It does tend to be fragile however so it doesn't take well to,scrubbing or paper torture of any sort.. I like the character of the surface your mileage may vary depending on how you tend to work.

03-21-2017, 08:16 PM
Vivien..love your soft feathers and pinky feet.
Christel..well done on the feather structure with green grass background.
Penny...ziggy,bunny and alpaca are so..cute.especially alpaca is adorable.
Wendy...loose and gorgeous goose.
Geoff...well done on ziggy, good luck for art exhibition.
Lesley..sheep and shirt of man are painted lovely.
Kay..always love your loose style.
EP..you painted two handsome owl and zippy.good job.
Deborah...Wow..love everything in your painting on rough cotton handmade paper.
Thanks for kind comment on my March challenge.

03-22-2017, 12:01 AM
Deborah - well done! I find working on handmade paper very difficult.
Lily - both are gorgeous!
Fana - lovely painting and drawing!
EP - cool! Love your style

03-22-2017, 03:53 AM
Thank you, Lily.

03-22-2017, 11:27 AM
Thanks for that info, Deborah! As a direct painter, this would work perfectly as usually I lay down one wash that is the final one.

03-22-2017, 04:13 PM
Thank you for the nice remarks about my goose and owl.

Vivien, I like your pastel goose.
Christel, the owl in oil pastel looks very good.
Wendy, that watercolour goose looks excellent, wish I could do the grass like you do.
Kay, your rabbit looks touchably nice and soft.

03-22-2017, 04:57 PM
Thank you all for the comments, Wow all the entries are so good and different.

Fana I like your goose and owl and you've included the background, I did first time and it was hideous. The grass is just flicking with a rigger brush and I used wax from a candle as a resist on the feathers.

Love the Ziggy ones, really nice to honour him for Penny in this way. Geoff your pencil one is lovely and EPs in ink and Khinchowin in pencil as well. Great.

Kay your bunny is lush so nice with the ink.
Deborah your toad is so colourful. I'm in awe of the intensity you achieved with watercolour.

03-22-2017, 10:11 PM
Lily/khinchowin888 - ziggy is so soft and the owl looks studious :) Thank you for your comments on my work

03-23-2017, 02:27 PM
Having a go at the owl, but March may not last long enough.

03-23-2017, 02:37 PM
😎😀 Geoff

03-23-2017, 08:59 PM
We will wait for you, Geoff.

03-23-2017, 10:26 PM
Here is my rather hastily done rabbit pastel, 5x7.... hey, at least I got one done this month! It looked better several steps ago, but, oh well, this is how it looks now.
Viv - what a lovely goose! I admire your skill with pastel!
Christel - beautiful little owl- he's so vibrant against that green background. I really like the way you handled the upper portion of the background.
Penny - all 3 are beauties, especially like the soft eyes on Ziggy - he has a beautiful expression.
Wendy - I do like your goose! Nice brushstrokes - it reminds me of a storybook - it has such a lively feel to it.
Geoff - that is a beautiful portrait of Ziggy.
Lesley - now that is a happy sheep! I like all the color you got into his coat.
Kay - Beautiful background, and you handled the rabbit's coloring so nicely. I love it.
EP - they are both nice loose renderings - nice color choices. Ziggy's pink ears made me smile!
Fana - very sweet watercolor of the goose, and I like the simplicity of the owl drawing.
Deborah - this is such a stunning piece! Love the mixed media on that fabulous paper. Your colors are gorgeous.
Lily - beautiful portrait of Ziggy! Your owl has lovely eyes, too.

Wow, so many nice pieces - Of course, we had plenty of great photos to chose from!

03-24-2017, 08:31 AM
Such a dear bunny, Pat. I really like the style and effect of his fur. Pretty colouring, too.

03-24-2017, 09:30 AM
Pat, that's such a great pastel! Your bunny has lots of charm.

03-24-2017, 02:04 PM
Beautiful work everyone! :) I might come back later to comment individually if I have the time!

I am swamped this month but I finally succeeded in finishing my entry. It's the owl done in Pitt Brush Pen on Canson XL Recycled Bristol paper 9x12. (sorry for the poor lighting on the photo...)

03-24-2017, 08:56 PM
I wasn't able to participate this month, as I just finished another version of the grasshopper from Feb. While I would love to comment on everyone's work, I chose a few standouts.

Penny - Your talent with the pastel is obvious!
Wendy - The face on the duck is perfect, and the grass was handled really well as a BG that did not compete with the main subject. Watercolor is so easy to overwork, and your restraint paid off.
Geoff - Praise is something you likely gets heaps of daily, but what impressed me the most was the life behind Ziggy's eyes. I truly felt as if we were making eye contact, and that is very rare with an animal portrait.
Kay - You bold handling and fresh strokes on the bunny were really pleasing.

03-24-2017, 11:31 PM
Pat - love the texture on the bunny (and around the bunny). And thank you for commenting on the pink ears :)

Virginie - what a distinguished little hooter

Thank you so much! This was a fast, loose sketch. It took around twenty minutes start to finish. The paint took almost as long to mix up... but that is just part of the fun! The gold color is Aztec gold pigment with some micro glitter mixed in. This whole journal has metallic and gold pigments used in it just for fun!

Deborah...love all 3 paintings, different animals,different background,different colour,amazing.
Thank you so much Khin!

I appreciate your kind comments regarding my sketches. I reall loved your owl painting as it has a nice sense of the softness of the feathers! If I were going to improve on it a bit I would do more studies of the feet of predator birds. They are creatures of the foot as are horses and hounds and they rely mostly on their feet for their survival. Study the morphology of the bones and the curvature of the talons as well as the lizard like scaling of these animals who are hereditary dinosaurs! They are as fierce now as they were when they ruled the earth, though smaller!

It is great horned owl mating season in the woods on my small farm and their mating calls echo throughout the forest on my property. They are magnificent creatures and what I call flying cats as they are very successful apex predators! I know people who trained them to hunt rabbits for the stew pot. Alas it is hard to get a falconer's licence here in the USA or I would have an aviary of hunting birds here! As always, Deb Hill

03-26-2017, 10:05 PM
Deborah.. . i love the foot of animals and birds, they look simple but very tricky to paint or draw.need to learn a lot , studying is never enough.i just saw real owl once last a few years ago in market.you are lucky to see these creature closer.

That is lovely, Deborah. I do like the colours and the "shimmering" effect. Excellent background to this great goose.

03-27-2017, 07:36 PM
Wonderful goose, Deborah - great texture in those feathers!

03-29-2017, 11:10 AM
Here's the Owl as promised, a bit of a rushed job i'm afraid, no time for background.

Coloured pencil on scrapbook paper.

03-29-2017, 11:44 AM
Deb, great grey goose with that wonderful foreground and bg surrounding it.
Geoff, yours always grabs me, too, with or without a bg.

Hi, hope I'm not too late to join the party. There are so many wonderful pieces of art already uploaded for this challange. You are all so talented.

This is my first image posting on WC! I went with a coloured pencil study of the Owl. I used mainly polychromos pencils, with a couple of prismacolours added in, on sienna Clairefontaine Pastelmat. C&C is welcome as I've only just started using coloured pencils in this way.

Pam, the crop of the owl was perfect in composition and negative space. You rendered the feathers well, with good value changes that look very natural. I look forward to seeing more of your work, as your talents are obvious!

Thanks Viv looking forward to the next challenge.

Pat I like your pastel rabbit. He's very snuggly.

Virginie fearsome claws on your owl but you've given him a wise old expression.

Deborah quite different feel to your rabbit, the pigma pen makes it a strong painting. Goose is lovely and colourful and thank you for the info on the owls.

Geoff Old owl doesn't look rushed at all. Great

Pam nice crop of the owl love the way you've done his eyes and feathers. I know nothing of pastels so am in awe of you all.

Here's a late one! Better late than never! Owl bet you've done better! Once again in the Nujabi sketchbook with pigma micron pen and hand mixed metallic and irridescent micro glitter paint. Could be worse, but half a loaf is better than none! As always, Deb!

Wow, fantastic gallery, I really enjoyed lookng through it! Great work everyone

So sorry I have nothing to show (again!) I was less than an hour into painting the bunny, and having fun with canvas and acrylic, and I got a phone call about a commission so had to put the bunny to one side ... I will finish it though!

Thank you so much for running this month's challenge Penny. The images were great and certainly inspired lots of paintings and drawings.

Viv. A wonderful gallery as usual. I know I speak for all of us in telling you how much we appreciate your effort.
