View Full Version : Lion cub in pastel pencil WIP

I originally started this portrait 2 years ago in coloured pencils, but just could not get the depth of colour I wanted so put it away, but now I've switched over to pastels (and seemed to of got my mojo back) I thought I would give it another go, so Ive restarted it, this time on pastel mat 35cm x 50cm and Im using a combination of Faber Castel pitt, Caran d'ache and derwent pastel pencils, and a few sticks for blocking and the background

Im not happy with the grey background which in the photo Im working from is grey rocks, so I might change that, ideals welcome!

Ive also ordered a few more colours in Caran D'ache to pull the highlights out

Excellent fur. Lovely portrait. I tried pastels but don't seem to get one with them, all the smudging, etc. I envy your facility with the medium.

Thank you for the lovely comments

here is the latest update, I ended up changing the grey background (which was stone) to a mottled green, which I hated so today I changed it again and turned it into sky, end up rubbing so of the ear away in the process so I will have to touch that up later, along with the whiskers and whisps of fur..

The wood has been challenging but I feel Im getting there, its not something I normally paint and least of all with pastels..
