Meet Lola, my first duck tolling retriever painted in pastel.
8x12 inches on pastelmat.

As ever, I dive in with the background. I do this as I think it makes the subject stand out, none of the fine fur detail is lost where they meet. I used sennelier sticks for the background (I treated myself to the whole set and am in love!!!)

Here is a shot of my easel. I use a spare bit of pastelmat to check out colours (think this one is almost full!)

You can see I use layers to work up the fur, first a general base colour, then I add finer details in light layers building up the colour and texture.

Here you can the chest area has been worked, it is very time consuming to add so many layers but it seems to work well for fur so I think it's worth the effort.

And the finished lady, isn't she stunning! I met her in person as I took my own references which is such a nice thing to do, plus it gives you an insight into the personality of the dog. Lola was very gentle and well behaved so she suited a soft focus background so all the attention would be on her.
As ever, any questions, please do feel free to ask

Karie-Ann,
I am wowed by your work. I hunt, train, compete, and live with retrievers and am intimately familiar with their many characteristic expressions. Your ability to capture those very special expressions is awesome.👌

I assume most of your highly detailed work is in pastel pencils. What pencil brands are you using?

Cheers,
Mike☘️

This is beautiful. I am an oil painter and thinking about trying out pastels, I have never used them. Any advice?

Apologies for not getting back to you all, thank you for the comments.
For those who asked about brands I used sennelier sticks and a combo of pitt, derwent and stabilo pastel pencils.
