View Full Version : Black Kite over Edith Falls (X post)

This is my first painting for 2017 - Oil on canvas board 24" x 18"
It is the second rendering of this location using a reference photo shot on a visit to the Outback during 2014.
The Black Kite was shot separately nearby, the region abounds with them, it is a wonderful site to see them riding the thermals.

I love it. It's a beautiful landscape painting, I love the texture of the rocks and the rich colours. Great positioning of the kite too, it fits in well with the composition. I love watching kites too, though it's the red ones we get here.

Kay, Dave, Sheila - Thanks for commenting. I have long been fascinated by birds, especially in flight as some of my paintings reveal. The Black Kites of Outback Australia are a dominant species - I've watched literally hundreds of them circling at thousands of feet over Katherine when ground temperatures were above 40C - I guess it was much cooler up there.

Stunning work Mark. I really enjoy your style and the colours are wonderful. Keep them coming.

Thank you Chammi. My present problem is one you yourself have probably experienced on finishing a painting - what to paint next. It can take days to exit from something youve inhabited for a week or more.

Wow Mark, somehow I missed seeing this awesome painting! It is so full of light and flight! The rocky cliffs glow and the water below glimmers like glass.

Kay, Robert, Jenna - thanks to you each for your encouraging feedback. Of all Australia's diverse landscapes I love the Outback most. I am booked on a flight to return to our red centre in June to discover more inspiring landscapes to paint. My current WIP is a vast panorama based upon the remote outback settlement of Barrow Creek, NT. At this stage I'm unsure as to whether it will incorporate any wildlife but it will be posted to Landscapes by the weekend, I hope! :clear:

Raptors overhead. Kites in the north! Kind of miss seeing 'em glide over on their murderous campaigns. Lovely and fresh. Cya around one day, eh?

Hello Pieter, thanks for dropping in. I'm sure you'll get to make it to the outback sooner or later - 'Miss Precocious' will grow up way to fast.
