I'm usually the last to post my finished painting, if I get that far. :o So at least I can be the first to thank you for hosting and the selection of photos!

01-31-2017, 11:47 AM
Thanks Joy. Now you have one day head start.

01-31-2017, 12:08 PM
Thanks Kay. If I chose one now I might get something finished on time! :)

01-31-2017, 02:26 PM
Great pics Kay, not sure about the stuffed coons

01-31-2017, 06:15 PM
Wonderful selection Kay.... I'm hosting the Acrylic challenge, but I'll see if I have some time to make one from here... they are lovely

02-01-2017, 06:53 AM
WOW! Great selection and thank you for hosting Kay! So many inspiring images, think I'll start with that grasshopper and the buck!!! <3 <3

02-01-2017, 09:46 AM
Hey Kay M, Wendy, Federico (love your blog), and Lori! Hope to see your amazing stuff on the 20th. The stuffed coons playing cards are in a New Mexico southwest furniture store owned by Texans we know...they have live snakes, rats and mice in there, too. So I'll try and get more photos next trip.

02-01-2017, 10:28 AM
Cool pictures! Already chose mine :)

02-01-2017, 10:36 AM

02-01-2017, 11:04 AM
Thanks, Kay. Some great photos to choose from.

02-01-2017, 07:16 PM
Great photos!
I really like the raccoons playing cards!

02-01-2017, 07:48 PM
These are great choices Kay ! I have a couple picked out !
love the card playing raccoons ! tyree

02-01-2017, 09:34 PM
Great photos, Kay. Ohhhh, Chester, you are so hard to resist.

02-01-2017, 09:40 PM
Yes, the raccoons are stuffed by a taxidermist, just too funny not to take their photos to post.

02-02-2017, 03:23 AM
Federico (love your blog)...
Thanks Kay, I'm glad someone has seen it :) I've been adding content slowly... specially because i do not have descent pictures of some of my works...

Super references Kay. Thanks so much for hosting. I am in South Africa on holiday at the moment but will definitely do one in my sketch book.

02-04-2017, 01:37 PM
Kay, is the white beneath the cat's head part of the bed, or is it her chin and neck? Thanks.

02-04-2017, 05:52 PM
Penny, Chester's neck and throat are white fur. His head is resting on a light tan carpeted cat tree. I hope that answered your question!

02-04-2017, 06:22 PM
Thanks, Kay. Yes, that answers my question. 😁

02-05-2017, 06:53 AM
I'm close to finishing last month's challenge :D so I might get started on this one in the next few days. :)

02-06-2017, 01:09 AM

Welcome back Viv! Don't worry if you don't have time as there are 8 days left.

Wow Christel what a perfect frog 🐸 that is spot on! It is so real looking! He will blend right in with that speckled and mottled skin.

I am not very happy with the frog. Its proportions are not correct. It is done in intense ink and oil pastels.

The sora bird is a quick sketch done in 10 minutes during a lunch break at work

aka Rainkowl:clap:

02-20-2017, 05:21 AM
Loving these frogs.
Christel yours is good, his green is beautiful and clean.
Penny and yours are fun. You've captured the cat beautifully. Favourite is the ink frog.
Lesley your frog has character, I love his expression.
better post my effort :)

02-20-2017, 05:23 AM
No frogs here. Mind you they're a bit warty do you think it's a toad.
Here's something for them to eat.

02-20-2017, 07:23 AM
Lovely frog, Christel. Really good colouring. I like the ink version, too.

Well done, Lesley. They both have character.

Excellent grasshopper, Wendy. I like him in watercolour.

02-20-2017, 08:39 AM
Penny - well done with the frog. The cat is so cool!
Lesley - both are lovely!
Wendy - your grasshopper looks great!
Thanks for the lovely comments on my frog.

02-20-2017, 09:10 AM
8.5x5.5 watercolor and ink line on Bienfang for mixed media sketchbook. The goats were too cute to pass up!
I'm loving your results all of you  thanks for participating

Penny, wow, CP version of Chester is phenomenal :cat: I'll show it to him. Your frogs are superb too!

Lesley, your frog could jump off the page and sora bird is a great quick sketch...you're not the only one who has to use break time to sketch  that's the only option some days.

Wendy, the light touch you used with the g'hopper is perfect for that insect 🐜 I love it.

Wonderful work everyone. Kay , your references were an inspiration. The toad/frog seems to be the star of the show so far. I have been inundated with visitors but still hope to give one of them a go.

02-20-2017, 01:42 PM
Thank you, Kay. I hope Chester is pleased with his portrait!

Your goats are charming. A lovely herd.

02-20-2017, 02:18 PM
What a line-up already!

Christel, your frog is beautiful.

Penny, I really love your cat who seems to be enjoying herself.
The frog is so nicely done in watercolour, pen and ink.

Lesley, did you disturb your frog? He looks quite nice, but a bit grumpy :)
The sora looks very good for such a quick drawing. I had no idea what kind of bird it was, I had to google it first.

Wendy, your grasshopper looks great, ready to jump.

Kay, love your goats, they look quite nosy.

I better get my masterpieces. I tried them with brush and ink first but did not really like the result so overpainted them with pastel.

The goats are 6 x 8", the sora 10 X 7.5".
I just think the goats look funny, especially the middle and the last one LOL.

02-20-2017, 02:46 PM
Okay, this is my first participation in a monthly challenge - not quite finished with this little guy as I can only paint one day a week, but I couldn't resist and plan to finish him soon. 8x10 Oil on canvas - named him 'Isaac' (moderator, feel free to remove if only completed works are allowed). So far it's been really fun! Thank you for these monthly challenges :)

02-20-2017, 03:14 PM
Lovely goats, Fana, and a bright little bird. I like your colours.

Excellent frog, Angie. I like the background, too. Look forward to more of your work.

The paper sounds interesting.

02-20-2017, 08:51 PM
I love your goats and sora, Fana! Pastel has saved me many times.
Angie, your WIP frog is amazing and looks like a photo almost, bravo.
So glad someone did the pigeon with that strong shadow to his side, Deb. Tell us more about the grass paper.

02-20-2017, 10:47 PM

Fana - love your crops.
Angie - your frog looks perfect already.
Deborah - cool texture. Love it.

The paper was carried in the USA by a Wisconsin paper broker. Shortly after I discovered this paper they quit carrying it and sold out most of their stock on Amazon at a discount. The sheets are the size of a full sheet of Mat board. they are acid free and 300 gsm 140lb. the paper is rough on one side and relatively smooth on the other so it can be used for drawing, painting or mixed media. Even under heavy washes there is very little warpage or buckling. In fact I paint with it taped down with masking tape for larger works and just sit the paper in my lap to paint or lay it on the table to paint anything under 16x20 inches.. It is acid free and archival I have yet to find anyone carrying it in the USA. The mill is located in Germany so you would be best set contacting them and asking if there is anyone who will ship it to you if you wish to try it out. Esparto grass is one of the earliest fibers used in European papermaking.. It is tough, resilient and it has a warm off white tonality that lends itself nicely to painting landscape or animals.. I like it better than Arches. You can scrub on it and scrape it and color lifts well off of it.. Google Schoellershammer Mill and see if you can find another distributor here in the USA..as I've said, I have yet to find it here again.

02-21-2017, 10:32 AM
I will try to find it.

Dick Blick had one paper called Italia acquerello that was perfect for watercolor and now they don't sell it or if they do it is not in their catalog. I still have their catalog inventory number for it though.

02-21-2017, 01:22 PM
Great work everyone! I'll come back to comment individually later or tomorrow :)

Here is mine, done with my new greyscale Tombow Dual Brush pens set on Fabriano Studio 9x12 CP watercolour paper.http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/21-Feb-2017/1986145-SnapV_Feb_2017_Animal_Challenge_Pigeon_Tombow.jpg

Very nice interpretation, Virginie.

Schoellershammer Watercolor Paper

The esparto paper is available in this country.

02-21-2017, 03:15 PM
Virginie, wow, love the darks and greys in the bird done with Tombows. You know you can add water to the darkest darks and it will turn out resembling watercolor?

Thanks for the paper link. I'll check it out and see if shipping doesn't overwhelm me I can order it.

02-22-2017, 12:03 PM
Well, I actually finished this the 21st ( only a day "late"), and needed correct lighting for a photo. There is much more yellow in the painting than I am able to capture with the camera, especially in the sky. I had wanted this to be bright and sunny, but I got heavy handed and overworked it again. It is a watercolor, 11 x 7, on Arches 140CP. The image was reversed, as I theorized we read from left to right, so the COI (the head) would be "read" by the viewer first.

Another version of this with minimal BG is my next project, although I don't know how I'll handle the contrast with the pale wings. Some of the drawing needs correction, also.

02-22-2017, 12:24 PM
I love the texture - the "washyness". The colouring is excellent, especially the shadows underneath.

I, also, like to draw animals facing to the left!

02-22-2017, 01:40 PM
Gorgeous Joy, love the backlighting, not overworked at all.

Thank you all for the kind comments on my painting.

Kay your goats are such fun you captured the cheeky look great. Lovely to see them in watercolour.

Fana your white goat is so comical. How can he look so sad, doesn't he know he's a star! Bird is nice too.

Angie He's great looks as though he's sitting on someones head. Actually a few do.

Deborah an exciting painting of the pigeon, love your colours.

Virginie a nice contrast with the previous painting, the blue makes it sing.

02-22-2017, 02:05 PM
Really, really nice grasshopper, Joy! Very atmospheric!

Lovely work everyone! I'll be back later to comment.

Here's mine; I just had to paint that little Yorki Pup "Sophie". She was just so cute, so I've done a loose watercolor of her. I decided not to add more detail as I like the loose look and thought it suitable to describe these quick, busy, little dogs. Many thanks for Hosting Kay.

02-23-2017, 02:07 PM
Mary, I love your tiny ACEO frog in oils! Too cute.
You did the bouncy Yorkie Sophie, Viv, looks just like her! Do more watercolors.
Lily, your wc bird with acrylic background is refreshing! I wanted to do this one, too, but am running out of time.

Viv, I'm wondering if you'd have time to make a gallery for us soon when this is over?

02-23-2017, 06:35 PM

I love all the pictures.

Viven I never thought of doing a loose watercolour of the dog, it is very effective.

Penny love your frogs

KreativeK I love the fact all your goats have different expressions and I could just imagine missing a flock and them looking at you like that

02-24-2017, 09:09 AM
Try not to worry, Lily, if yours is late as it is no big problem.
Viv, thank you once again for saving me.

Thanks, Lesley, and everyone for your comments.

02-24-2017, 09:57 PM
Yes, that frog was quite the prince this month!

02-25-2017, 02:47 PM
Thanks for hosting Kay. My late response to the challenge is this watercolor toad with a little black wc pen on 9x12 watercolor paper. Animals aren't my forte but it was fun.

02-25-2017, 04:44 PM
Great colours - I like your impressionistic frog!

02-25-2017, 09:12 PM

Love the latest posts. Sorry I have not been able to take part this month - just too tied up here in South Africa with a constant stream of visitors and a gallery demanding two paintings from me, of which only one is completed. Wonderful response to the great reference photos. Thanks so much Kay for hosting. I am looking forward to Vivien's Gallery.

Many thanks to Kay for Hosting and to all of you for entering the Challenge. Also many thanks to the Mods who looked after this Forum while I was away on holiday.

Thanks to everyone! Great gallery, as usual, Viv.

02-28-2017, 12:16 PM
Viv, your gallery is tops! Thanks to all who took part.

Lily, your goats in watercolor/ink are very special, so inquisitive.
Mary, tiny grasshopper is very neat.
EP, Sophie is too cute and so is the bad kitty Chester.
Geoff, your frog is so real he could start croaking any moment now.

Thanks again everybody! Time for a new challenge to pop up.

03-01-2017, 02:34 PM
Wow! What an amazing gallery!

So sorry Kay that I didn't manage to take part. I had a load of stuff going on and I hardly got any painting done at all last month. I had a really good idea for the cricket as well!

Christel - I love your frog! I liked the first version, but it looks great in colour. Lovely textures.

Penny - lovely happy cat, I really like how the background and the collar tie in. Great gnarly frog too.

Lesley I like both your pictures, the frog does have character and the bird is a great sketch.

Wendy - I love your cricket, I really like the fine lines and delicate colours. I agree with you, I thought it was a toad too - they tend to be warty, not smooth like frogs. Whatever it is, it's lovely!

Kay - lovely goat painting. You have something of their personality in there - they look like they're on the approach, waiting to crowd in :)

Fana - lovely work with the pastel, the bird is my favourite. I really like that green in the background. Lovely work on the feathers too. I like the goat that's peeping out from behind the first.

Deborah - lovely pigeon, great work on the bold shadow.

Virginie - lovely monochrome pigeon, I really like the effect.

Joy - I wouldn't say this looked overworked, it's beautiful. I love the way that some areas are really detailed, like the wing venation, and other areas are more abstracted, like the background. it works really well.

Mary - cool frog / toad, I like the range of greens.

Viv - cute pup! I love the softness of it.

Lily - great combination of watercolour and acrylic, it's produced a lovely range of textures and lovely painting too.

Kate - I really like this! Love the colourful frog/toad and the background too.

Lily - great goats, I just love their expressions and I like the splashes of yellow.

Mary - cute cricket - so tiny!

Eyepaint - fun pictures, I like the vibrant colours.

Geoff - wonderful. I love the textures, the greens, and the shine in his eye. Great work.

Hope I haven't missed anyone. and again I'm so sorry I missed the challenge! I'm determined to produce something for March! I just have to finish my challenge painting for January first, which I am still working on (so, so slowly) :)
