View Full Version : Greg's Sketches - 2017

Hi Folks, I have never really maintained an Art Journal as such. Most of my sketching has been on odd bits of paper, various drawing pads and digital sketching. I am attempting to gather things up digitally and in a single drawing pad or journal. All of these have been done this year (I think).

Greg

Hi Folks, here is another bird. I think it is a Titmouse. I seem to go back to the birds when I get into a painting slump. Ive been in such a slump for months.
I have found that using a computer in my artwork has really hurt my drawing skills so I have come back to sketching and drawing to sharpen up. This little bird is 5x7, done today in ink.

Hi folks
This one is a 30 min. graphite sketch. I am finding that making myself draw every day can be a chore. I might try to ink this one later.

This one is an oldie done about 40 yr. ago. It started out as a Silver Point and at some point over the years morphed into an ink sketch.

A collection of pens and brushes were used.

Wew! Great sketches, and I like how you did that last page with the digital background on the painted vase of flowers. Well done! You've got a good eye no matter what you use, pen or graphite or paint. Cool sketchbook. I've got multiple ones and still sometimes work on loose sheets.

Excellent perspective on the street scenes, too. Really liked the one with the reflections.

Hey Greg!

Taking the SUV sketch that far in five minutes is really good!

On the rose drawing, I think the values on the leaves in front are very strong and good. My thought on the main part of the flower would be to lay in (carefully!) some "occlusion shadows" or "crevice darks"-- those little slivers of nearly pure black in, well, crevices, that make the form punch out. (An example in your own drawing is the dark edge on the front leaf that makes it punch out from the stem.) But, the overall form looks good, especially on the front rose petal.

Composition wise, I think the stronger, sharper handling of the leaves is pulling my eye down there away from the flower itself.

Well. . . I'm all outta C&C!:)

This is my latest attempt. It started as an attempt to get a Batik watercolor effect. As I got into it the painting started talking to me and this is the result. Not much Batik but I like it.

Gary, this was done on my iPad. I used a watercolor paper texture on the base layer. The black was put down with Heavy Charcoal preset. The white was done with the Soft pencil tool.
