FLYING CHIEF
8.75 x 14 in., oil on panel
Completed 2017

A Boeing F4B-4 of Fighting Two grabs some morning sun above NAS North Island, circa 1934. At the time, the unit cycled between cruising aboard the USS Lexington and training at North Island. The “Flying Chiefs” of Fighting Two (VF-2B) were known as “The hottest outfit afloat” because the pilot cadre were mostly a small group of hand-picked enlisted Naval Aviation Pilots (NAPs).
