"Whoo, a train!"
(concept study for oil painting)

Class as ever Wade - I like the full frontal of the P51 - looks like it will be interesting light too.

FYI, up to now I first did a detailed outline of the landscape/train alone and then the Mustang. From there, I move to my value study(ies), starting with an aircraft-only rendering (see below).
After that, the combined full concept drawing seen above.
For color, I'll first do a full monochromatic underpainting in oil on the final canvas, essentially duplicating the values of the concept drawing at the top of this thread. When that's laid down, and I've tweaked it, I'll start in with color washes then opaque paints.
Long process, but it's proven successful for me and I find it easier to build slightly on each stage this way, culminating with the final art. A very detailed WIP of my process can be found on my Facebook art page (see link below). Look for my recent photo album, "Fighting Cobras."
