Happy new year! I like the rooster - looks like an illustration from some magical tale in a children's book. :-)

I haven't done much yet. Just some quick sketches to get my eye back in, and I discovered somewhat to my dismay that my fine motor skills have become badly out of shape.

I am into watercolour practice at the moment. Trying to figure out where I am going with this.

Tyree if you want to start a project on using pastels or coloured pencils please do so. It could be for jan and feb to give us time to join in...

Tyree, I love the rich and dark colour effects in the background and on the bird's wings.

Its not so easy to get the darks dark enough with cp, I find. Something I could try to improve.

Just spent 4 hours watching a kid's TV fantasy programme. I enjoyed it but now need to move my legs ..serious numbness.

Hope you're having a good weekend.

wow...we had a wee bit of cold spell...into the 40's at nite:eek: !
warming back up again...

here is a question for you all...
i did the challenge in the w.d.e. last weekend..and
the challenge was to make your work an abstract..
i took the challenge..and painted what i thought
to myself to be abstract...
someone replied that while it was lovely..it was not abstract..
so my question is..
if in your mind..it appears abstract..why isnt it?:wink2:

just a thought !

tyree :grouphug: to all !!!!

Funny you should mention this - I just completed a huge and rambling post on abstraction on my blog:

Not sure it will help much, mind you. :-)

Its a big question: what is abstract art? To my simplified way of looking at it...there is representational art, where there is an attempt to make things look as they appear to the eye...realistic. Abstraction seems to focus on more arbitrary principles such as pattern, feeling, idiosyncratic representations.

You can have abstract figures. And by contrast ...Realistic figures.

What we may most easily label as abstract art... focuses more on non-objective colour/pattern etc. Abstract seems to focus more on abstract ideology or values...maybe a direct communication of more spiritual/intellectual ideas.

But I am not an art history expert. Just attempting to figure it out for myself in regards to doing some painting! And not really getting anywhere fast.

I tend to nitpick drawings to death. To help me shake the habit and develop a broader, more painterly style, I am messing around a bit with sticks of charcoal...

Nice portrait! I can take a reasonable stab at drawing portraits, but I have mostly been too terrified to try painting one. :-)

In the meantime, another Dutch landscape (acrylic on board, 20 x 25 cm):

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/25-Jan-2017/142294-17-2_acrylic_on_board_20x25cm.JPG

And another charcoal sketch:

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/25-Jan-2017/142294-100_3376.JPG

I think I should try drawing a portrait with charcoal - it might serve to help me eventually paint one, because I have noticed that working with charcoal sticks is really more like painting than drawing. But I shudder at the very thought of trying to draw something as difficult and subtle as the mouth using a thick, unwieldy stick of charcoal... :-)

I'm painting u[ a storm. Haven't tried one in oil for ages, so here we go:

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/26-Jan-2017/142294-17-3_oil_on_board_25x20cm.JPG

Oil on board, 25 x 20 cm (which is about 10 x 8 inch, for all those 'Murricans). I think the thing perhaps ended up a bit too hazy and ethereal, but on the whole I am pleased to see I haven't gone completely rusty with oils...

LOvely work Brian. The Dutch tulip fields are vibrant with colour. I love the tonal study on the pears. and the oil of the tree looks really good.

Thanks. I am thinking of doing a whole series of charcoal sketches, and small oils in the "daily painter" tradition. I should have been doing it long ago, but got distracted, as always. :-)
