View Full Version : Dartmoor village peep

Over the years I have attempted to convert a photograph of mine to a Dartmoor village view. This time I am zooming into the view from around 1 mile away and height.

My working sketch so far.

A lovely place. Personally I prefer having the foreground as in your photograph.

Hi. Yorky, thanks for your input, I have painted the whole scene previously over the years but the foreground elements amount to over 70% of the scene, Unfortunately at the time I was unable to walk down the hill and get into the village and I am sure there is a painting down there, so having a go.

Have you tried looking for the place on Google Street View? You can usually explore the village if you can find it on Google maps. Where is it?

OK, I will have a go but it must be 30 years ago, there is a stream in the picture that might help location.

The last time I went up to the moors I got lost, I used to have business calls up there one day a week and I knew my way around just like London.

Hello again Yorky, I found it on Google street view as you suggested. Its a terrible looking view, winter, damp and very uninviting, could be the reason.

Ponsworthy Devon

go along the lane up past the village to the ford and it is more charming!

Yes a pretty village.

Your sketch looks good. Looking at the street view, you probably couldn't have gotten a better shot closer up anyway, unless you got off the road and climbed on something. lol

I have now returned to this subject a Dartmoor Nat. Pk. scene. I have maintained the original camera view of the scene, perhaps one day I can get down to road level to paint or perhaps visit the location live for another camera shot.

Painted with Corel Painter 2017 and many of those particles and speckle type brushes in the program.

Any suggestions welcome.

A nice homely scene.

Nice! A very snug and cozy scene. Makes me think of three old friends standing together smoking their pipes and pleasantly discussing the state of affairs.

Thanks for all comments. It printed well at 150 dpi in PSD and became my wifes 79 birthday card for the 31 December 2016.
