a couple of years ago I was making some Russian dolls for my
grandaughter and my students wanted to have a go. I worked in my sketchbook thinking of all sorts of ideas - one was a nativity scene, which I did some designs for but didn't work further on.

So I'd got a couple of differently shaped sets left over and decided to make a start. Here are Mary and Joseph standing on the sketchbook :) Only angel, shepherds, sheep, kings etc to go!

Done in a mix of cp and acrylic, they will be varnished in clear varnish to seal them

That looks fun, and very seasonal! Beautifully done! Love the way you posed them on the sketchbook.

I was thinking of you the other day. I was at a holiday market and one of the stalls had Russian dolls...but nothing as nice as this. I'd love to try this. Do you have a place to buy the unpainted dolls?

Hi Joan - yes Amazon or ebay. We bought from both when I was doing them with my class. Just search on Russian Doll blanks and loads come up, very big sets to small and different shapes. I hadn't a clue whether they would even be available when I made the first set and that's what I looked for - couldn't think how else to describe them!

Would love to see what you do with them :)

and thanks for the nice comments everyone :)

Oh wow, didn't realize you not only did the sketches of them, they were planning sketches for painting the dolls. Very cool! They are great. Wonderful idea for a set!

Thanks :)

Yes I've made a few different sets over the years but the nativity is the largest I planned.

my classes came up with fabulous ideas for their projects - the old woman who swallowed the fly, costumes of the major continents, law - police, criminal, judge etc, superheroes - the ideas are endless :>)

Oh sure! I'd probably do a family of cats! Perhaps a family of grumpy cats with their ears pinned back, due to the shape.

:) I've got a cat set that my daughters bought me many years ago as I've always loved cats
