View Full Version : Artist's quotes

I started writing interesting quotes by artists into sketchbooks as I came across them. It means I re-read them from time to time instead of forgetting them.

This was one I picked up today, quoted by David Parfitt (http://davidparfitt-art.co.uk/paintings/), whose work I love.

'The painting, in order to move us, must not merely remind us of life but, must acquire a life of its own' Lucien Freud

I agree :)

Are there any that you particularly like?

another I like by art critic (a really good, intelligent, non-poseur one) Robert Hughes

The greater the artist, the greater the doubt. Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize

I love "A line is a dot that went for a walk" (Paul Klee)

and "All art is at once surface and symbol. Those who go beneath the surface do so at their peril. Those who read the symbol do so at their peril" (Oscar Wilde, Picture of Dorian Gray)

Also, not so much a quote, but I love referring to artists' tools as "weapons of mass creation" :D

I adore art quotes and sometimes your soul just needs them. Thank you for these.
