I thought I already posted this but since I can't find it, here it is again.:clear:
Looks kind of flat, how can I fix it?

Very Nice. Perhaps some more contrast. For instance, shadows on the bird, and some more contrasting leaves.

Yeah, you could try a little more contrast. It's not bad though, it just looks like a hazy day without a bright light source.

Also add a bright little highlight to the eye.

I just realized, I started this by opening a reference image and the canvas was set to 591 x 600 pixels. Can't blow it up now. Lesson learned.

I'll work on the background and try to add some more contrast and shadow.
Thanks.

I like the colors of the male cardinal, and agree it needs some shading on it. Also the back ground tree trunk needs to be darkened and refined. The leaves more texture too. Fun to paint :)

I really like what you did with the second one. It forces the focus on the bird. Nice work

Terrific background for your beautiful bird Dick. Well done! :)

Thank you all for your comments. This was my first attempt at painting a bird and I'm quite surprised at the level of realism I ended up with, at least with the bird. For me, this is my best yet but I really don't want to do realism hence, the background.

I have made a sizing mistake (or 2) myself. It's only when you start to detail that you realize it.

I like it a lot. It's kinda flat but that's OK. Some of Matisse's most wonderful works are much flatter. My only quibble is that the beak looks stuck on. The top and bottom of the beak don't come together a little like chopsticks.

These are nice. I know you said you are not going for hyper realistic but I do feel the feet are a little small. I think that these are nice and you should be proud of them.
