Hi Barb,

I love your sunset painting too. I like the tree silhouettes on the right.

Isn't it exciting to be let loose with these vibrant colours? I've been having fun painting clouds in pastel too in Craig's project.

Alan, in the project guidelines, you asked for members to upload some photos. Do you want them here in the thread? I'll put this one here, and if you want more, or want them in the WC Ref Library instead, please let me know. This one was taken at the lake outside my studio.

Hi what you are missing out in both of your wips is the bright colors you need to put in your sunset colors first then the darks...right now you have no room to put them in.....thats how I see it give it another go....yellow's and reds first...then the darks..

Thanks, Alan.

When I saw the project, I felt I had to give it a try.

It is pretty much done, but I wanted to hear what others thought before I called it quits. In the darkest sections, I mixed several colors but I didn't "overmix" them. I like the effect, but it was getting a little striated on the right hand side. :cat: :cat:

Hi Barbara,

I like the lovely fresh colours in your sky & water, The tree silhouettes are good too.

I find the darks the hardest to do in any painting. If you don't get them right in their first wash, then they start to lift off next time I overpaint.

Suggestions welcome.

I've just uploaded 4 sunset paintings for this project. This one is my favorite, a painting done from a daytime photo of the same area, remembering how it looked at sunset the night before. The actual painting is not as dark as the digital, but attempts to lighten it washed out all the color.

Thanks Leo

My old watercolor teacher always had us move through the color wheel when we applied washes. We started with yellow, green ect. depending what a particular painting needed. I know that most people don't do it that way. I really only applied one dark wash and then added some colors into the puddle.

I hope that helps.

Thanks Crystal, you are right.

I think that I will probably just do it again & hold back on the yellow.

I double painted the sky as my colours didn't scan very well at first.

I've just bought some Sennelier watercolours for the first time. I was looking for transparent colours so maybe it would be a good test for them.

Learning all the time eh?

Thank you Alan for your nice words, I wil try to lift some of the color, and practice more. From this week on I will get lessons, then it will probably go a bit better.
Thank you very much for your ideas. It gives me a lot of inspiration.

Greetings.

Hmm... I tried to paint one (I had never used watercolor before)
and it didn't turn out that good. One of the problems is the paper curled even though I taped it down. Any thoughts?

Yes thats what I thought...jump up to any 140 LB paper you will really be alot happier with it....and all I do is tape it down...I also don't like pads....get the full sheets and cut them....I use Windsor Newton and bockingford....both 140 cp

Here is my first watercolour morning. We went up to Port Stephen's (north of Sydney) last weekend for the NSW Game Fishing Comp. I got up early to see the men off (you're not going to get me going out to sea!) and did some sketches as well as taking some photos.

Heading out I could see the boats with the early morning sun reflecting off them. There were distant clouds which made the rest of the sky a lovely purple.

Thanks Alan and Nina

The blue was a glaze of quinicridone gold and cadmium yellow, with some ultramarine blue and dioxazine violet.

I got a little more texture into this painting than I've previously got, so I felt as though I'd progressed. My watercolours often look flat (but there's the challenge!!).

Thanks again for your encouraging words.

This view is from our loft window - I'm always taking pictures of the dawn through it. Some of the colours are outstanding & hard to imagine in terms of paint.

I have to stand on some step ladders to see it though as my legs are a bit on the short side ! LOL

Really? I looked at this and thought "how hard". It is very atmospheric. If I can look at a painting and can feel where it is, I feel that the artist has conveyed something significant. (your pic does that for me)

I live on the water too. Every day it's different - and so hard to reproduce! It's such a gift to have it, and the dawn's are the best (I suppose we're both on the East side of our respective countries, so have relatively little choice if we can see water...?). I have a project I must do at some stage which is a painting of our local cemetry. In the early dawn (usually pre-dawn) some of the mausoleums are designed to reflect the early light with a glass cross. It's at once eerie and beautiful.

Looked at several entries for sunsets. Paper seems creased on some. What you need to do is fix the (watercolour) paper to a board with gummed brown paper strip. Masking tape isn't as good at all. Wet the paper thoroughly, let it soak a bit and then dry it with a hairdryer. It should stretch tight and stay in place. Hope I am not stating the obvious. Regards, NW.

Good job Joni, nice to see a sunset over land you have a good composition here my only nit is the brightest part of the sunset is very central you might be able to pull a bit of color and spead the highlights out a bit.

I still think this is one of my most appealing.
Love the clear blue sky above, but with the brooding weather rolling calmly in.

The key here is to get the orange triangle to match the same value that the field has. A dark shade of orange, green, red, violet, There are a million ways to do this. You can even clone the field so it may continue into the orange spot. This will cover it up. It will be hard to duplicate the colors in water colors because they're not opaque like paint. Good luck in what ever you decide.

Thanks! Mine originally started as a watercolor----it's there underneath other layers of mainly rubbed in oil pastels now.

I'm part of this thread, so I'll be looking forward to seeing your art when you're done...or do a step by step for beginners such as me!

Hey Alan,

Super sunset. Where can I get more online techniques or lessons on sunsets?I haven't been here in a while been golfing too much. I may have not seen the answer to this question of "How do you keep the yellow and blue from being green? :( ." I use M.Graham WC and I put downe Aurolion yellow first figuring its light and I could paint over it with Ceulean blue. Wrong! The yellow came through and looked green. My painting over all was good until that. I should post the picture to show you. The Gamboge near the Ultramarine did beautifully. No green.

Well I would stick with the A yellow and the ultra blue.....and also try to not do much mixing on the paper. As far as demo's try the serch at the top.

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/565/progress/46818/tn_dumbluck2.jpg

I call this painting "dumb luck" because the sea here was supposed to be the sky for a sunset seascape. The last glaze pulled too much detail out of the "scud" I was planning, ruining the sky. I turned the paper around to use as scrap to doodle another sunset. When that one worked well I noticed that the colors went well with the spoiled first attempt, so I painted an orange wash between the two.

I've put some rocks up front and used goauche "spray" to cover a stain from the spoiled (former) sky and to turn the deep colors up front into a reflecting tidal pool.

All that remains to be done is to throw in a point of interest. Hmmm, shall I use the sailboat on the horizon cliche, the palm tree leaning into the picture cliche, or the lighthouse on distant peninsula cliche? :D

If I don't screw it up this may be one of my best paintings to date - and it's mostly accident! :(

Any suggestions?

Alan Cross

Hi John and thanks for throwing this one in here....you have done a very good job so far with your accidents  my advice for what its worth is a distant sailboat.

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/565/progress/46818/tn_dumbluck3.jpg

Thanks Alan - I'm still waffling between boat and peninsula. :)

After seeing this on the monitor I realized that the tidal pool kind of "ran out" the bottom so I added another line of rocks across the front to enclose it.

BTW, it's not quite as dark as it is showing here. I'm leaving the flash off on the camera to avoid glare. When I do the final I'll scan it so the colors will be closer.

Well, here is the final, such as it is. I considered using pen and ink for the boat silouhette and wish I had - I'm either going to have to start using larger paper or get some smaller brushes.

Canson Montval 6X9 block, M. Graham paints.
