View Full Version : Hard Pastels with Vibrant Colors

I am still in the process of building my "stash" of pastels and would like to know which of the hard(er?) pastels have really bold, vibrant colors that I might use for a first layer.
I am particularly interested in deep reds, purples, yellows and blues.
Which are your favorites?
Thanks for any help.

I love both Conte and Faber Castell.
The Conte crayons are slightly waxy and while I've never had a problem layering softer pastels on top, you would probably want to avoid filling the tooth of the paper with it.
Faber castell has a beautiful dark reddish purple that is my favourite for dark underpainting. The number is faded but I think it reads 194.
Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for the rec. I will definitely put this color and pencil on my list of ones to try. I love purple!

I'm a fan of the Faber Castell Polychromos too. The colors are vibrant and they are more lightfast than other brands. I don't always cover my first layers completely and wouldn't want those areas to fade or change colors in the future.
