This is an Oil painting that I'm in the midst of. I thought at first that I would paint the actual scene which has the iron fence going through the leaves and across the front of the log cabin on the right. At first I wanted my main focus to be the leaves and flowers in front and behind the fence.
Okayk, I started the fence as you see here and I already had the iron top railing going all the way across. Now I'm not so sure that I really want the fence to go all the way across the painting or not.
The big fence across the whole front seems to tell my eyes to stop and go no farther into the painting which is not what I want it to do.

So, this is what I'm thinking of doing and that is to start making the rails on the end of the fence to begin slanting downward of sorts so that it does not stop the viewers eyes and it doesn't cover the log cabin. Also am thinking that a slope of the fence would allow the eye to go up the slope and to continue to follow the fence line around the painting and to end up back at the cabin.

Here's where I'm at so what do you thing would be best?

Tammy,
the fence would actually slope downward...check your perspective by using the house to determine the vanishing points. by them sloping in accordance with the vp I think you'll solve your problem.

Ok, Arlene you mean I should slant my fence in the front downward coming of the cabin and going to the corner of the fence or slanting downward toward the cabin. Also, should I leave a half fence or put the full fence across the front of the painting as the real thing is?

Am familiar with vanishing points so perhaps it may be another part of the fence that you are refering too. Does the back one look ok?

Thanks for answering. I was beginning to wonder if anyone had any ideas about this at all. I haven't had time to work on it. I've been painting my kitchen instead.

what i've shown is how the perspective should be...notice the building is off too.

I agree with you that the iron fence all the way across the painting would be too much and restrict too much of the background and house. I think just a portion of the fence on the left like you have would be enough as if it's a broken iron fence? Or you could have a gate open in the middle and the iron fence on both sides?

Thanks Betty. I haven't got back to this painting yet so most open to suggestions.
I'm thinking you may be right. Goodness, that log cabin is never gonna get some logs on it! :D

Ok, so I can't help being excited. I finished this one up the best I could and would just start this subject again on a new canvas with some of the advice given by all of you.

This one I've shown to you tho I finished up and put it for sale on eBay with a Buy it now price. Guess what? It sold within hours of listing it the same day for a really decent price. At least for me.

Yahoo! Maybe I better keep up with the Oil and lay low on the Acrylics for awhile.

Tammy, my first and immediate impression was that I visually felt tension and discomfort in that the horizontal bar of the fence lined up with where the background foilage/trees rooted to the ground.

Perhaps a little late now, but for my own good, I guess I'd have had the fence a little taller, or lower so those lines did not merge and overlap.

...appears that you sold it though, so congrads on that!!!!
