What an awesome morning, with the Brisbane Urban Sketchers. (https://www.facebook.com/groups/usk.bne/) It was a gorgeous day, overcast and moody. Perfect drawing weather..
Mowbray park is an historical park in East Brisbane, named after the Reverend Thomas Mowbray, who arrived in 1847. He was one of the earliest settlers and became known as the father of Presbyterianism. In 1851, he opened Brisbane's first Presbyterian Church in Grey Street, South Brisbane.

First sketch of the day was done in my Mont Marte A5 sketchbook with my lamy pen (medium nib) and my Hero fountain pen (fude nib)

My second sketch, I had started the sky on it earlier, but because of the closeness of the day, it took ages to dry. After we all had had our morning tea and show and tell, my friend Margot and I went back down to the park to finish our work. It was so peaceful, and the sky was forever changing. I loved it.

This last photo is looking toward the mouth of the river. What awesome views the houses around here have, and what an awesome place to build for the early settlers.

The title "Paddington" was given to this area after the London suburb of the same name. Paddington was originally referred to as being "Back of the Jail". The main jail was located on Petrie Terrace from 1860 – 1883 Brisbane Petrie Terrace Gaol accommodated 96 prisoners in 2 cell blocks.
The Police Barracks was from 1883 – 1885 Petrie Terrace Police Depot, where police training, operations, stabling of horses, and also a motor vehicle depot.

In the 1860s there was a rumour that gold had been discovered in the Paddington area. Two shafts were sunk, one in the Paddington Cemetery, but no gold was found.

My first sketch was of the Caxton Street Hall - Built in 1883 by the Loyal United Brothers Lodge. It has served as an Oddfellows Friendly Society Lodge (1884-1916), a clothing factory (1909-38) and a Labor Party Hall (1928-99).

A beautiful day out with the Brisbane urban Sketchers. It was sunny, but quite cold in the breeze on the river. New farm park is right on the river front. I sat with a friend and I drew the historic bandstand. I did struggle with my perspective, and took much longer than I intended, so I didn't get the drawing finished.

Brisbane Arcade is Brisbanes oldest shopping mall. It was built in 1923 for Dr James Mayne, and his sister Mary Emelia Mayne. It was designed by Richard Gailey, Junior (the son of architect Richard Gailey)
Brother and sister, siblings and parents lived in a Butcher Shop built by Patrick Mayne. It was built on blood money that Patrick admitted to on his death bed. The Mayne siblings had the butcher shop and home pulled down, and built this amazing arcade. All the proceeds from this arcade go to medicine.
A fascinating book to read, is the Mayne Inheritance..

KANGAROO POINT CLIFFS with the Brisbane USkers

What a super day it was.. Winter and 22 deg Celsius. It was glorious at the Cliffs cafe. There is a new manager there, and he came up to me and asked about our group. He gave us all a free coffee :-) wow eh, there were 10 of us..
A little history of the kangaroo Point Cliffs.
The Kangaroo Point Cliffs were created by convicts mining the volcanic rock or ignimbrite or welded tuff which form the cliffs. Records indicate that it was Captain Patrick Logan who first opened a quarry to supply stone to his building works as early as 1826. Those structures still standing today include the The Old Windmill and the Commissariat Store..

My first warmup sketch, is of the Brisbane City Boat harbour. This is a short term mooring, only 3 months and they have to move on. It is cheap though, I think it is still only $50.00 per week.

I was attracted to this corner, and the winter trees. We mostly have evergreen trees here, so it was a delight to see this one..

It was a wet day today, so a few of us found sitting on the verandah of Milton House (http://www.mustdobrisbane.com/visitor-info-arts-culture-history/milton-house-milton) the best palce to sketch..

My day started badly, awful traffic. I did not expect that, then the Citycat I was expecting didn't arrive. The "Cat" that came along next was an express, so I had to wait 20 minutes for another one. To top it off, it was high tide, so the "Cats" do a "go slow" as they can't make a wake near private pontoons. I was horribly late.
I was so grateful to see my friends sitting in the Coffee Club waiting for me, when I finally arrived at 9.45am instead of 8.45am ..... What an awesome bunch they are..

Cook Terrace, named after the builder Joseph Cook, who erected the terraces in the 1890s.
Originally home to many of Brisbane's professional residents, the building was used by the armed forces during WWII, and then converted to flats afterwards. For many years they were rather unkempt in appearance, but they had a full makeover in 1984. At that time, the interiors were gutted and the building was converted to offices, with a restaurant at the western end.Save

The South Brisbane Cemetery is a heritage-listed cemetery. The cemetery was established in 1866 and remained in active use until the 1960s, after which its use has been limited by lack of space for new graves. By the early 1960s, the cemetery was effectively full and the cemetery was closed. However, as with most closed cemeteries, additional burials and interment of ashes in existing family graves continued to occur. Some additional plots were released in the cemetery in the 1990s. The first person buried in the cemetery was Jane Hockings in July 1870.

He flew off when I was about to take the photo. Guess he was shy.

St Marys is a Heritage Listed Church. In 1873, the Anglican Church of St Mary the Virgin was built by Alfred Grant at Kangaroo Point to a design by well-known Brisbane ecclesiastical architect RG Suter. It is a Gothic design, constructed from Brisbane porphyry or "tuff", possibly quarried from the Kangaroo Point cliffs immediately behind the church which overlooks the Brisbane River from its hillside position on Main St near River Terrace.
The stone structure replaced an earlier timber church that had been built in 1849. The sturdier material didn't prevent damage from a cyclone that struck Brisbane in 1892 The former shingle roof has now been replaced by the Queensland favourite, galvanised iron.
In 1876, a pipe organ was imported from a church in England, and it remains in the church as the oldest pipe organ in Queensland. Apparently, when Queensland's governors lived at Old Government House, this was the church they frequented.

Great job on the dragon boat sketches. We have a place that has the races here every summer but it gets too crowded to see anything...nevermind to sketch it. Love the sketch of the ferris wheel. Historical National Trust House, was constructed in 1865-66 as the colony’s first purpose-built accommodation for immigrants, the building has been converted to offices and laboratories for the Department of Agriculture and re-converted into offices for other government organisations.
The first immigrants directly from overseas to what is now Queensland arrived in the Artemesia on 15 December 1848. As more immigrant vessels followed, the capacity of the city to provide an accommodation base for those who had spent months at sea was sorely stretched. A journalist in 1863 commenting on the temporary three-shed depot being used at South Brisbane noted that, by comparison, ‘the most uncomfortable cell in the Brisbane gaol must appear almost an earthly paradise’.
Plans for a new Immigration Depot, consisting of two, multi-level wings at right angles to each other between William Street and the river were prepared by Charles Tiffin, the colonial architect. The building was constructed in sandstone (for the footings) and brick by contractor John Petrie in 1865-66. The three levels in the rear wing accommodated single women in the upper level, married couples below them and single men in what is today the building’s basement. With space at a premium, luggage was stored in a shed adjacent to Queen’s Wharf.

Joan I am a Tour Guide. I am a Brisbane Greeter, and I do take international visitors and locals and interstate folks around the city.

I also have been studying the History of Brisbane City for many years :) It is fast changing now, I have this urge to document it all before it is gone forever..

Aubigny Place is a magnificent old building sitting on Mater Hill. It is named after the first Mater Hospital, a private house at North Quay, that the Sisters leased. It took 5 years to have the new hospital built and opened, but it happened on 14 August 1910, when the new hospital was officially blessed by Cardinal Moran and opened by the Governor, Sir William MacGregor.

The Cupola has been recently restored after disastrous hailstorm damage back in 2011 It looks magnificent again, and begged to be sketched.

Great new sketches. Of course, you couldn't let that cupola go unloved. What a great little final touch to have for a building. Really like your arch sketch too. I also agree that your little tit-bits (tid-bits for my comrades in America) of history really add something to the proceedings. :)

For around 160 years Wilsons Outlook has been a gem of a park overlooking Brisbane City. The views are stunning. Bowen Terrace was one filled with gorgeous villas, but sadly they have almost all gone. Behind Bowen Terrace on Brunswick the 1889 Brunswick Hotel still stands.
I sketched the iconic Story Bridge first, with a small portion of the iconic Howard Smith Wharves (1930) underneath. Second sketch was of a historic house, on the corner of Bowen Terrace and Bowen Street.

It has had a varied life and has had alterations and refurbishments in 897-1902-2005 when it was converted into the present Film school.

Mowbray Park was built from 1904 to 1974. It is also known as East Brisbane War Memorial and Riversdale.
In the early 1920s, the council constructed a floating swimming enclosure in the river next to the park. It became very popular to swimmers of all ages. The swimming pool led to the formation of a surf life-saving club that still exists, now associated with Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast as the Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park SLSC.
Floating baths were first introduced to Brisbane in 1857 and were to remain a feature of the river for some 70 years. Such enclosed baths were supposedly "shark proof". One of the more prominent and popular of these floating baths was the "Victoria Baths", situated against the river bank on the downstream side of the Victoria Bridge's southern approach (1880s). Mowbray Park and Dutton Park were the the other floating baths. At the public floating baths, bathing was often segregated, even to the extent of different swimming times for male and female bathers.

This morning I learned someone I love dearly has passed away. I was committed to our sketchout and I know Janine would have wanted that.
I didn't stop thinking of her and her family all morning, and through my tears I made three small sketches in ink, also fulfilling another InkTober day.

What a wonderful morning, out with friends sketching at the almost new TRI It is such a beautiful building, built on an historical site. There was once a Broom Factory on the site and a glorious building housing Vision Australia. The red clay bricks from this magnificent building have been incorporated into the TRI as have the red clay tiles. I have tried to find a photo of the Vision Australia building, but sadly I can find nothing about it at, or the Broom Factory, it is as if they never existed.

The Brisbane City Botanic Gardens are the first Botanic gardens built in the city. Part of the riverside site where the gardens are located was originally a botanic reserve. It was established in 1828 to provide food for the early penal colony. The City Botanic Gardens officially opened in 1855. That year, the botanic gardens' curator Walter Hill was appointed as the first superintendent.
The gardens have had a few changes, there was once a Zoo and a bear pit located within them, and three tortoise. Tom Dick and Harry. Harry, a giant Galapagos Land Tortoise. was later discovered to be Harriet was hatched about 1830. She and her two brothers were brought to Brisbane from London where Charles Darwin had taken them, by Lieutenant John C Wickham, who was then in the navy. After Wickham retired from the navy he lived for some time at Newstead House and when he returned to England he donated the tortoise' to the City Botanic gardens. Harriet the oldest of the three, lived to approximately 175 years of age.

William Street is a small, relatively quiet road in the uptown part of the Brisbane central business district. The street is historically significant to the city's early development as a penal colony. The first convict buildings were built along William Street in 1825.

The Government Printing Office occupies 110 t0 84 Williams street and at present the National Trust is housed in part of that building. This will change this month as the building has new owners. The Queensland Government Printing Office was the first purpose-built government printery in Queensland and operated on the site from 1862 to 1983, playing an essential part in the administration of Queensland for 121 years. The interior will be incorporated in the Queens Wharf Project. (http://www.destinationbrisbaneconsortium.com.au/index.php)

hey Joan. Lane-ways are service driveways. They were used in days past for vehicles to deliver goods to the business's some still are. They were seedy and homeless people, drug addicts and other undesirables used to live in them, and there was a huge crime element.

The Brisbane City Council set a plan in action to clean them up and make them attractive. They now have cafes and are nice places to visit and they are quaint and awesome places to sketch.. Bakery lane (http://www.bakerylane.com.au/) is the biggest of the two in Fortitude Valley, ad the owner of them Terry, told me he has just bought two more lane-ways and is going to develop them next year..

Thanks for looking EP :)

Doug, Bill, Joan, yes it is a load of fun sketching with a group. :)

I started this group five and a half years ago, and it that gone from strength to strength. We now have over 600 members, and between 10 and 20 come to any one sketchout usually.

I am very proud of what I have achieved. :)

Fun morning, sketching in the city. I love sketching with this group, they are such fun people. Lots of laughs. :)

Before 1842 and free settlement, Queen Street was originally a track leading from the main section of the early Moreton Bay Penal Colony, crossing a stream known as Wheat Creek with a deviation going up to the Windmill (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/). Today, it is a bustling pedestrian mall, that has 25 million visitors a year walk through.

The Regent Theatre is a heritage-listed building, located at 167 Queen Street, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was one of the original Hoyts' Picture Palaces from the 1920s.
It was constructed as the first and only American-style picture palace, reflecting the opulence and grandeur of the great Hollywood era, to be built in Queensland, and was one of many operated by Hoyts in Australia.
The original interior decoration was a mixture of Spanish Gothic and Romanesque (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/). The mezzanine (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/) foyer contains a white marble staircase, made from Queensland marble, along with vaulted cathedral ceilings. A total of 2,600 patrons were able to be seated in air-conditioned comfort. Sadly the theatre was demolished in 2010 to make way for office buildings. All we have left is the foyer. Look HERE (http://www.yourbrisbanepastandpresent.com/2010/02/regent-theatre.html) to see what is way like..

Yes it was a terrible thing to do. Greed :( There is one still intact in Melbourne, that is used as a live theater. It was not as opulent as this one and that is what makes it even worse to destroy it.

I hate that the government and city council have all but destroyed our wonderful heritage buildings, and what are left in the city centre are hidden by butt ugly structures..

What a wonderful morning with the BRISBANE CITY SKETCHERS (https://www.facebook.com/groups/BrisbaneCitySketchers/) We sketched at the library today, firstly outside, for an hour or so until 10.00am when the library opened.
I love sketching in the "Red Box". The "Red Box" is encased in full length windows, which gives the impression of being suspended over the Brisbane River, it is a fabulous place to make art, quietly, and the views are endless.

Fun morning at the university of Queensland at St Lucia. We holed up in Wordsmiths Cafe as it was some hot after the horrendous thunderstorm at 4.30am.
The University of Queensland was the first university in the state and was officially founded on April 16, 1910
Teaching started in 1911 in Old Government House in George Street, Brisbane. In the first year there were three faculties – Arts, Science and Engineering – and 83 students (60 men and 23 women).
After World War I, the University expanded rapidly and soon outgrew its inner-city location. In 1922, an additional site in Victoria Park (now occupied by the Medical School) was secured. Four years later, Dr James O’Neil Mayne and his sister Miss Mary Emelia Mayne provided funds to buy the St Lucia site where the University’s main campus is now located. Construction started on the St Lucia site in 1937 and the first building, later named the Forgan Smith Building after the Premier of the day, was completed in 1939. During World War II, it became the advanced headquarters for the Allied Land Forces in the South West Pacific.

Centenary Park, a heritage listed park, was designed and constructed for the purpose of commemorating the centenary of European settlement in Queensland (1824-1924). Clearing of the land began in 1924 and the park was formed in 1925.
It covers an area of 8,748 square metres and is bounded by Wickham Street, Ann Street (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/) and Gotha Street, Fortitude Valley. The park was one of the last civic projects undertaken by the former Brisbane City Council (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/) prior to the formation of the Greater Brisbane (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/) Council in 1925. The park has been in continual use by the public since its creation and was extensively refurbished in 1999/2000

Celebrating the centenary of European settlement in Queensland was an important milestone in the state's history, an opportunity to demonstrate how far it had progressed in 100 years. From its beginnings as a penal colony, followed by the arrival of free settlers, separation (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/) from New South Wales, Federation (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/) and the First World War (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/), Queensland had experienced many tumultuous events in its first 100 years worthy of commemoration and celebration. The creation of Centenary Place provided the public with a tangible means of doing this.

Shafston House is a heritage-listed villa at Kangaroo Point, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Robin Dods and built from 1851 to 1930s. The building is now known as Shafston International College (http://www.shafston.edu/), it is freehold property once again - The building is a landmark feature for Brisbane's ferry and CityCat passengers.

Today I went there with the Brisbane City Sketchers to sketch. Gorgeous day, and a load of fun.

Wow! Thanks for posting the photo with it. Great outdoor sketch, especially with the shadows that got so interesting. I guess it's warm and comfy down there!

It's been cold up here, cold enough I haven't been doing much. Yesterday was a break in it so I did a good pastel to half done, still need to finish it before Christmas. Happy stuff, I got a new cat! Sissy is a Maine Coon runt, big and fluffy, who looks like Ari's daughter or sister and is actually Ari's size. She has huge fluffy feet and amazing claw control. It was days before I found out she even had claws and she never puts them to skin.
