View Full Version : How to paint wet

I've completed my digital painting of a hippo in the river and want to give it a wet look, but everything I try just looks tacked on and doesn't look at all like water. Sooo... how do you paint wet?

Maybe I should have titled it how to paint the illusion of wet skin, or wet fur. I've searched the internet for a couple of weekends now with little success. I've even looked at my hand in the water. When I try to apply it to this image, it just looks like a mess of white (or blue or grey) even if I make it a bit more transparent. Sigh, its very frustrating, but I'll keep trying.

Here is the best attempt yet. I don't know if it works or not. Above is the before and here is the after attempt. Please let me know it this works. If not, how can I improve it? Are they too subtle? Boy I'm really struggling with this.

here's a close up

I didn't like that version either so here is the final image. I have so many other paintings I want to do I had to just decided to do my best and move on.

Great work, Kathie. If you post your work in the main animal forum, you're sure to get more feedback.
