A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Painting Outside the Lines
Project Leader: Faafil
Relative Difficulty: Medium
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Develop a painting using negative shapes. Any subject, or abstract.
Free your imagination!. Challenge your right brain to see and understand how to create depth and atmosphere by painting the space around your object using overlapping layers with successive glazes.

Explore the beauty of negative painting and learn to incorporate it into your customary approach to painting.
Remember, you are not painting the object (flower, leaf, tree, circle, etc.), you are painting the space around it.

Although we'll be painting negative shapes, your participation is a positive ! Enjoy

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=561)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Doooooh, cute but makes me sneeze from here. :cat:

MaryLou, Any hints on how to get started on one of these. Do you start with a wash and then start picking out shapes. ?

HEP' ME !

Li... I took a shortened version of Linda's class... She had us wet our paper down on both sides... then we dropped in our choices of strong colour onto the paper... That becomes your underpainting... Let it dry thoroughly... Linda uses a hairdryer profusely...

You can "plan" your shapes when you're dropping in your colour or you can wait and see what happens with the underpainting... When I did my class, I just let it happen and then worked with what was on my paper... This time, I more or less planned the placement of my colour hoping that the shapes would suggest themselves... so far, so good....

Next... start with the foremost shape... that is, the one closest to you and negatively paint around it... (you can draw in your shape if you like)... Linda doesn't usually draw, but I find it easier and less confusing... in fact, she recommends drawing in one shape at a time for beginners...

Graduate your wash around the object you've drawn... That is... start with your strongest colour next to your object... Wet your brush and touch it to a cloth and wash around again, slightly overlapping the strong colour... Wet your brush again and touch it to a cloth (it should be pretty clear) and go around again... Graduate from strongest colour to almost clear water...

Then, after you've painted around your first shape, move on to the second one... and so on...

A couple of pointers...

Objects breath the same air... imagine yourself standing with your arm bent and hand on your hip... the air around your entire body and the negative space between your arm and body should be painted in the same colour...

Be sure that strong colours form an invisible triangle... Place your strong negative painting in three different locations (forming the triangle) to tie your composition together...

Well whaddya know, my project is up and running and I didn't even know it !! Also learned there is no way to change the verbage once you click 'continue'... :o

Char, great info from the class, you paid attention... :D

Spent all day yesterday doing my leaves wip... pressure got to me I guess, cuz I was 3 layers into one, didn't like the base colors, and decided to go over the whole thing with a light glaze. Let me tell you....DO NOT GO BACK AND REGLAZE THE WHOLE PAINTING ! I figured, it would be just one more layer, and push the rest back as such... NOT !!

Sooo, I did another one... and finished it. Getting ready to post it now...:)

Hope y'all have fun with this project...:D

Great WIP, Mary Lou, on your leaves (even if it was your second go at them;) ), as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Although, Char's added explanation certainly enhanced the concept.

Thanks to both of you for that.

I've signed on too although at this point I seem to have more Projects going than fingers and toes combined. I just couldn't resist negative painting though.

Faafil
10-19-2003, 12:13 PM
Pam, I wasn't sure what to put as reference photos - I'll see if I can find a few... I did add my wip as a reference... 'lil Fooks is soooo cute !!

Ruth, Li and Sylvia, glad you're on board...

Char, thanks again for adding that info - helps make the concept more clear...:D

Do you think the whole painting should be done in negatives? I mean, I know you can add background trees, flowers, etc. into a painting that isn't necessarily all negative space, but incorporated into a painting...

painterbear
10-19-2003, 09:30 PM
I agree with Pam about leaving it up to the artist.

As long as you can really see the use of negative painting within a larger painting, that should be good for showing how versatile the technique is.

Of course, doing an entire painting with negative painting is terrific too.

This is probably about halfway finished. I need to do more glazes to bring out stems and leaves. It also needs to have some darks added, right now it is all middle and light values, but I wanted to show that I was working on one for the project.

I'm enjoying this a lot. I've always liked the way negative painting looks. It's a little complicated because you have to watch out for both hard edges and soft edges as you add each glaze.:

I'm ba-a-a-c-k! I decided that this would look better as a horizontal painting rather than vertical. Will be adding the darks to accent the flowers thrusting upward instead of down that way.

I need your input. I am toying with the idea of turning the green mass at the bottom (behind some of the green flowers) into a large bowl-shaped vase. What do you think? Should I make it look like a bowl or more like a mass of leaves and stems????

I can see merits either way, but I'd like to see what some of you think. Thanks. Sylvia

Thanks for your comments Kathy and Pam. Hmmm, good question Pam. I think 3-4 layers in the gamboge, ...some kinda red, and burnt sienna washes , then 2-3 in the green/ blue/ purple. Ha- how's that for technical ? LOL. There are two branches way in the back ( just before the darkest wash ) but they don't show up on the photo.

Fun project Faafil ! Now if I could just learn to do it the way you, Char, Alan, Ruth do it. More three dimensional. I guess that will come as my watercolor skills grow.

Cheers,

Li

Lovely painting, Li. It does look as if it were painted on silk. Those tiny little flowers are wonderful nestled around the longer leaves and stems, did you paint around them or use frisket to preserve them?

Love your dragonfly theme and how you have them in the foreground and the background. Looks like you've got the idea now for negative painting.

I'll have to be more discriminating in my next negative painting, I found a little too many flowers in this one and it has become a jungle.

I think Alan is right when he says these take a lot of planning to really look good. I had fun doing this, it is a good way to loosen the brain up and think creatively.

Yes Sylvia , the flowers did get a tad busy but you also produced a very lovely bouquet and example of the technique. You are way ahead of me because yours looks full and three dimensional...the point of the exercise I think. You were able to pick out just the right abstract shapes to darken. I'm not there yet.

I think this technique is much harder than it looks but you made it look easy.

Thanks Sylvia. Yep, I totally cheated on the tiny foreground flowers. I was barely able to save to big stuff. There are actually three layers of the tiny flowers, receding with the layers, just didn't show up in the photo.

Thanks for your comments.

I planned the first couple of washes and then it just sort of developed. I have to keep remembering that the parts that get more washes are going to recede into the background.

Thank you Mary Lou and JA.

I went outside and gathered different species of Maple Leaves and drew out the first few on my initial wash and drew a few more out for my second wash. As the washes got deeper I began to be able to start the deeper wash and let the images develop without drawing them out first.

A few times I got confused and accidently washed over an area that was supposed to be a shape. I am going to do another negative soon for this project.

I agree with that. I've never managed to get a "ordinary" watercolor on paper. But with this technique I have so many new ideas. I framed my two entries in a neat frame with a black passpartout and they really look cool together. I've already finished two new washes. One in the same size I've done already and another on 50 x 70 cm's. For the small one I have no idea what to do with it, but for the big one I will try a field of tulips (stupid that I didn't think of that earlier coming from Holland :D )

Doesn't the Fabriano work well for this method?

I can see the koi... this is going to be beautiful.... can't wait to see your progress...

Unfortunately this has turned out to be more positive painting than negative painting so will finish it for one of the other projects I'm in and start a new one for this project. I'm having too much fun here to stop now.

Hang in there...I did not get it the first time either

The biggest hint is to paint around them with the same color ...then go to the next layer.....add another and paint around them all again with another color

Your cats are cute.....

Maybe start with an easier subject and try to do only 2 or 3 layers till you feel more comfortable

I agree with pam ..... and the cats are adorable... wonderful choice of subject matter... since you have several colors I would chose a deep blue and go around the whole thing just to get the idea of how the cats will pop out. Then see what you want to do from there....Good luck and keep going you have got the right idea now

has anyone wanted to go back to light once its dark? I realise it would no longfer be negative painting but the urges still comes to me when i paint too dark LOL

I have been looking forward to joining this project ever since I saw Faafil's leaves in the Gallery and saw she was starting a project. I love the unimaginable possibilities that can come from this. I found it to be a bit time consuming, but hopefully will get easier as I try more paintings. Really had to concentrate on not painting the positive space!

I have a question about the glazes though...do you use extremely diluted paint for these? Its also hard to determine what colors to use. I started with light colors then got darker as I went along.

I love the one you did starsprite,,, vibrant and free... so nice for fall. Bravo!!! I couldnt get the thumbnail to show in here tho...
I wound up making thin washes...yet rich in pigment for this project and stored them in little cups like the ones the possum palatte offers... that way I didnt have to premix everyday.

I've made a total mess out of what negative painting is suppose to be. I did use watered down masking fluid and flicked on with a toothbrush then after the first wash, removed it. This was so bad that at the end I used the end of my brush to scrape in some tree trunks. I learned one important thing, simplify the subject until I know more of what to do.

C & C appreciated,
