My first impression in Cappadocia - the lovely plain with the Taurus Mountains in the distance and volcanic hills in the middle ground.

Our driver was very careful and experienced and I felt completely at ease as he negotiated the twisting mountain passes.

Hot Air Balloons rise into the sky at dawn. I was amazed at the number but the colours were great and the landscape nice to sketch whilst my husband went on a balloon trip. I am terrified of heights so was happy to stay on terra firma with my sketch book.

There are quaint remote villages where life is simple and conservative but the folks seem happy. I had a number of curious villagers practically standing on their heads to watch me sketching. I had chosen a wall to lean against hoping for privacy. No chance. I eventually ignored the audience - a good omen for the future:D

The Dervishes are a religious community and their dancing is very intriguing. The turn in circles always in the same direction and seem to eventually dance in a trance. We were not allowed to take photos so my sketchbook was unnoticed as I tried to sketch the essence of these young men.

This was a beautiful mosque. Time was limited but I managed a quick sketch sitting on a bench in the lovely gardens surrounding it.

Everywhere one looked, whether in the streets or in the gardens of the hotels we stayed in, there were cats and kittens. It was sad to see that many of the young females were pregnant. Cats are on the move constantly so I captured a few sleeping ones (cop out , I know) and one or two in action.

Lovely sketches. How I love travel sketches. Love doing them and love looking at them.

Really like the distance you got in the mountain picture. Also like the contrast of colours in the balloon picture- earthy landscape and bright balloons. Love the cat picture. Have seen similar scenes- not in Turkey. Can't resist giving them fuss (and hoping not to pick up fleas or ticks).

Thank you for sharing your sketches from your trip. I like that you were seeing some of the small villages and capturing the scenes. Good job on the mosque! I smiled at the pages of cats. When I was in Istanbul last year they were everywhere and usually came and sat with me when I sketched. lol

Lovely and so good for you to look back on in time, bringing the sights and smells to mind better than any photo

You are so right. The colours are stunning in the landscapes, carpets and textiles. We are going back this year as we loved it so much.

Yours is the first post I delved into as a brand new member to this online group. I was attracted to your 'travel journal' as I like to see what people capture while on a journey. I am prepping for a trip to Spain in spring. My sister used to live there and now i am going with friends for a 2 week art retreat we are creating for ourselves. I was telling friends that my sister wasn't into art so i never did any but looking through my 'things' i found i did sketch all the time, i just never added colour. This time i am bringing my watercolours!

Chammi, wonderful sketches. They almost make feel as if I was there with you on this trip.

Really nice work - the cats are great, and the landscapes are impressively done.

Your trip sounds quite lovely! Hope you had a great time!
I love seeing your travel sketches as well. :3 The little house and the kittens are my favorites.

Here are a few sketches during my trip to South Africa. There are more which still have to be scanned. I'll share those later.

I was so busy working out the composition for this lighthouse, that I tripped on the boardwalk and cracked three ribs. I was numb with shock when I sketched this. My husband thought I was crazy. Hence the slight tilt.

These cottages are inhabited by local fisherman. Could not resist sketching them.

I really appreciate the nice remarks about my travel sketches. It is fun to share them with you. I relive the experiences.

Ouch on the ribs. Hope you are recovering well. Lovely, lovely sketches of your travels.

Very nice sketches! I hope you recover well. I will never again tell my friends to start sketching instead when they get injured doing sports. Sketching can apparently be dangerous too...

Lovely sketches. I'm really drawn to Hout Bay, and the lighthouse. And of course, the cats cannot be ignored. :)

Munin. Thank you. Took a look at your sketch blog. Fabulous. Will be popping in more often.

JJ. I remember so well years ago when we were both so involved in the Watercolour Forum. So glad you like the sketches.

...what a great collection of journal pages, the turkey ones really capture the heat and character of the place. Super boats and cottages, but ouchie, cracking ribs is seriously no fun. Take care, love these sketches...👍🏼

Sorry you got hurt!!! Even when you are planning to sketch you have to be careful. I took my sister out plein air sketching and while we were walking along a wooded path she tripped on a root and really messed up her arm. Both hands were carrying her sketching supplies so she didn't put out a hand to break her fall. You did excellent sketches while injured. Love the boats in the harbor and that rocky tidal pool. I hope there are more sketches for us to see.

Didn't realise I'd missed so many - lovely sketches but ouch about the ribs

Thanks Joan and Vivien. We artists are a tough lot and the ribs are almost healed now but will be watching my step in future!!

I am trying to get an urban sketching group together and was joined by five other sketchers in a beautiful little old town called Mindelheim. Unfortunately most were beginners and kept asking for advice so I only managed to finish one sketch.

With a sketch like this one, Chammy, I can understand everyone asking you for advice. I hope you can get a group together. It makes it so much nicer.

Great sketch. They've got to start somewhere and if you keep helping, you will soon have a great sketch group.

Nice perspective in this one. It's warming to hear you are willing to help and nurture. I like urban sketching, but I always feel very self aware and embarrassed. I think being in a group would help that to some degree, so I hope you continue to provide guidance.

Thank you Debby, Joan and Munin. Glad you all liked the sketch. I really enjoyed doing it. I will continue to help wherever I can. Sketching is such a great pastime. Munin, wish you lived closer to join our group. No need to feel spare. Just enjoy yourself. Find a wall where noone can look over your shoulder!
