Hi All!

I've just finished a painting of a pair of USS America's VF-74 "Bedevilers" F-4J Phantoms escorting a Soviet Air Force TU-95 Bear during an overflight of the ship in 1972. The work is 18 X 24 inches, acrylic on canvas.

Questions and comments welcome!
Jim

I think as individual parts they are well done. Placed together there are a few small changes to be made. The scale of them in the piece reads a bit off. It appears the carrier is close and it creates a bit of a visual paradox for me (possibly just my eyes?) It may be tied into how all the whites in the piece read. The clouds, the F4 radome and the wake of the carrier have extremely similar values and this may be what really squishes some of the distance out. I think if you paint out the clouds on the bottom edge it would immediately improve the distance aspect here and let the scale read a little better. Did the Bear really get that close to the carrier? I would imagine whoever was in charge of air defence would have been royally blasted for it.

Hi Jim & Thumper!

Thank you so much! Personally, acrylics are pretty easy, what I have problems with is oils...I'm a definite "mud mixer" with oils!

Thanks again!

Hi D'Arcy!

Thank you so much for the comments! Actually, I did intend for it to be fairly tight, as the photo recon missions of the TU-95's did come VERY close to the carriers. The aircraft in the painting are supposed to be about 300 feet above the water, and close to the carrier. Here are a few photos of actual intercepts in the 1960's and 70's to show how close they flew.

I will take another look at the painting and see if I can make some changes.

Thanks again!
Jim

Hi D'Arcy!

Just a follow up, I think the problem may be the setting on my camera. I placed my laptop next to the painting, and the values are definitely different. I will play with it this week and try to get a more accurate photo posted.

Thanks again for your keen observation!
Jim

Really nice composition on the painting. The arrangement of the aircraft and the wake from the carrier really helped me to 'walk into' the picture. The phantom was such a curvy shape, a real joy to paint.

I like the aircraft. The painting as a whole works well apart from the distant wake of the carrier which ( for me ) distorts the perspective .I feel it should run out around the level of the second bar down on the mast .

Those are some pics! Wow, you imagine how tense the fleet had to be to have this happen when it was known that the Sovs were supporting Vietnam at the time of some of these. Big pucker factor on the bridge!

Hi Neil!

Hmmm, something to think about. I may still be making some changes (getting rid of the cloud in the foreground), so I will give the wake a good look.

Thanks for your help!
