Inspired by an article/picture in NY Times about displaced people.

MY QUESTIONS FOR THE GROUP:
I am getting back to my naive loose style after getting some instruction on techniques. Any observations are welcome.

I like the loose approach that's going on here very much...very expressive.

My two areas of concern are the lack of viewer-right hand (distracting) and the extension of the staff out of the top of the picture (IMO, it would be a much stronger composition with the staff shortened so that we see the top of it with a little breathing room to spare within the image.).

I agree about the hand: I think I will draw the hand and leave it unpainted, and see how it looks. Thought there was something annoying about the picture and didn't know what it was until you mentioned the stick dividing the composition.
