View Full Version : RNZAF Macchi MB339
10-17-2015, 11:40 PM
Was asked by a mate to do yet another RNZAF plane!
I was quite taken by the attitude of this Macchi in the reference pic so Ive started it. Pretty rough image colour wise so using a selection of pics to get the right greens and grays... (and not sure yet if I have!!)
Not much done this weekend, just a taster to get started after a couple of weeks off recovering from a bad cold.
Simple coloured pencil drawing and I probably wont do a background at all on this one! doesnt seem to affect sales if its just a vignette!

If it progresses as good as so far, it will be a cracker.

This will be gorgeous!

some small progress.
Reference pic is all wrong re colours so am having to reference a 2nd photo for them and adjust for shadows etc... so far so good tho..
Long weekend here in NZ (Labour Day Monday) so maybe a little more today/tomorrow... and the All Blacks are in the RWC final.. yay!

What medium is that ?

colored pencil Gollum. Mix of Polychromos and prismacolor plus quite a few other nameless harder pencils. All Oil based.
Just coloring in really but quite soothing for evenings after hard days work...

Got the hurry up on a commission painting a couple of days ago (trailer sailer yacht) so have to get this Macchi done asap.
Couldnt resist the kiwi emblem.
Go the ALL BLACKS!

 Impressive so far.

Looks very nice and the blank background adds to it if anything.

another weekend wooshes past!!
I think Ive used all my greens and greys in doing this plane! But its nearly there now..
The photo has overdarkened some parts but Im sure you get the idea.. I still love the attitude of this plane! Port wing only to go now!!!
and hey... the All Blacks (NZ Rugby football team) won and are World Champions!

Coming along very well, faminz.

I gave the flanks and the tail a very light dark acrylic wash which worked Ok I think. Maybe one day Ill try a background of clouds etc but for now less is more!

Very good, well done.

Left Tail plain needs darkening
Cockpit frame and inside detail needs darkening and sharpening
Some Sunshine Glint on the glass would look nice
Mirror your picture on the computer for a fresh look
Nice little aircraft :)

Thanks for comments gollum. LH tail plane is actually light great like the starboard drop tank, so more or less the same colour. Take your point about the cockpit darkening tho.. Will have a play at that later.
11-15-2015, 07:26 AM
:) Thats really good.I agree with keep it simple ,no background for now
11-16-2015, 05:15 AM
It's a great image and the plain backdrop works really well. The only thing is i'm not sure where the light is coming from. Directly above?
11-17-2015, 12:49 PM
yep, above and to the left hand side.
11-18-2015, 06:22 PM
Came out well . I agree with Len as regards bumping up the contrast in places but a good job . The size of the aircraft in the image is too large for anything but a minimalist backdrop so you're right less is more in this case.

for the sake of completion this is the signed / scanned and cleaned up image.
Sold one print already to a chap at the RNZAF Ohakea airbase so Im guessing he used to work on them..:)
ps: hard to get the contrast right with the photo.. its actually darker than this on the print.

Well what's done is done
I would still not be happy with what is shown
Left / Port tail plain
I would darken (or) at least put in some panel lines as the way it is it appears to be at a different angle to the (right / stb) tail plain
And the cockpit details are lacking in depth and final detailing
But hey if it sells as is
11-28-2015, 08:24 PM
I did actually darken both the port tail plane and the cockpit with Photoshop gollum. But the photo hasn't really shown that. Que sera sera.
