Hello everyone,

Last week I completed what was my most time consuming painting so far, 4 months. These are WWII rations painted in a green shadow box. All items in this piece are painted their actual size, so some of the detail images below are larger than the painting. It's dimensions are 9" x 18" and it's Oil on Panel.

These rations are some of the items that servicemen would have received during the war. This particular group of rations would be considered a "Smoker's Dinner Unit" because of the addition of the small 4 - pack of cigarettes. The off labeled "Pork Luncheon Meat" produced by Hormel Foods is indeed re- labeled Spam. It's probably not the most nutritious meal, but it's what they had in the 1940's. Other items included, a stick of Wrigley's Gum, Charms Candy, crackers, a can opener, sugar, and a matchbook labeled "VD". The VD matchbook was to remind the servicemen that the disease was easy to pick up - nice huh?

Hope you don't mind, but I have included many details images. A couple photos at 800 x 800 will not suffice. Anyway, enjoy :)

Sorry Derek, but I gave the Spam to my dog, she really loved it!

 I was gonna give Spam another try, but upon opening it, the smell convinced me otherwise. Some people eat this stuff regularly, and Derek, if you are one of them, I don't mean any disrespect - it's just not for me.

Back in February I made a small review of Spam on my blog. http://www.nitpickyartist.com/blog/spam-anyone

I'm probably one of the few who still loves to eat spam...I eat it for breakfast periodically.:clear: It is definitely not for everyone, and I am not usually a fan of things from a can....lol

Your work is stunning, for sure. I am in awe!

What brand/kind of brushes do you use (the tiny ones) and how do you keep your hand steady? I shake like a leaf. I know about the mahl stick, but I can't tell if you use that (or need to)?

Thanks for the compliment! I mostly use the Princeton 3050 series brushes. I can usually keep my hand steady as long as I can rest it on the painting. You can see some photos here on my blog http://www.nitpickyartist.com/blog/new-work-in-progress-another-78-record

Ha ha, thanks Matt, but the text isn't exactly perfect, but I do spend a lot of time trying to make it look so.

I start the text using this method -

http://www.nitpickyartist.com/blog/remembering-iwo-jima-ammo-box

After that, it is mostly free hand with a small brush. Occasionally I will check my work with a small 6 inch ruler. The greatest challenge is keeping the letters a consistent height and the entire row of them straight.

Wow, the lettering alone is incredible! Nice work!
Very timely to view this not long after our Canadian Remembrance Day just yesterday. Beautiful work on your website as well!

Thank you Grace, Bertoni, and Clode!

I'm hoping to get this painting into a few competitions come the new year. It's been awhile since I've shown anything locally in the Chicago area.

Also, I even made a short video of this painting featuring Glenn Miller's "In the Mood" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWR-_jjv2Rc

Wow!!! I had no idea at first (excuse my ignorance) that each item was individually painted. I knew of trompe l'oeil but had to actually look it up to understand it. To deceive the eye is an understatement. This is superlative.

Thank you Chris! I truly appreciate the complement.

The trompe l'oeil genre is fairly small so these types of paintings are fairly uncommon; I blame the time and patience needed to complete this type of painting. However, it is a very exciting approach to see when done correctly, especially in person.

Thank you Derek! Spam seems to be a hit or miss food most people. Some like it, some don't. Thankfully there are more options these days

Thank you! Yes, but I also use a quality photo reference just to see how the camera handles the image, especially highlights.

Wonderful job.

Thanks Keith!

What fantastic subjects to paint! This work is fascinating to me; not just because it is painted with amazing, impeccable precision, but because it tells a story. I love it!

I managed to get this painting in this summer's issue of Studio Visit magazine. I'm excited to see my first publication in print! Below is what my one page spread will look like.
