Morning at Debden, Essex. 4th Fighter Group pilot 1Lt. Bob Wehrman, of Greenwich, Connecticut, fires up his 336th Fighter Squadron P-47C Thunderbolt for a three-hour "Free Lance" (fighter sweep) over France on February 5, 1944. One enemy aircraft was sighted during the mission - which was not engaged - with light flak observed. Most of the group landed back at base at 12:40 pm. The next day the 336 FS downed two Fw 190s. Later in February the 4th FG began their transition to that "wizard kite," the P-51 Mustang ...
