07-31-2015, 10:05 AM
Hello oil pastelists!
Below are the reference images for August's challenge. Feel free to use your imagination and go wild! You are also free to post works in progress if you need any help or advice.
Please tell us:
What support you used including any surface prep.
The finished size of your painting or sketch.
The brand of oil pastels used.
Whether you have used anything as an underpainting.
Other mediums may be used to complement, but the work must be primarily oil pastels. Oil sticks and oil bars may be used. Wax pastels are welcome too.
You have a month, but the thread will stay open so if you are unable to post by the end of the month you can do it later.
Have fun everyone!

I'm fascinated with stones but I haven't heard of this stone yet. My version A5
08-03-2015, 01:03 PM
That's beautiful, tuscanny, really lovely. Excellent colours, so luminous.
These stones are labradorite, one of my favourites. I just love how they look like a boring greeny grey stone until the light catches a streak of blue or gold. So pretty

Great capture of the color of these stones, Christel.
08-03-2015, 03:57 PM

I had quite a time with the Tor. A5, first I lightened it, then I decided it needed red in it, then my composition needed something on the left and now I decided to leave as is.

Hello everyone! I'm new to the forum and I wanted to say thank you for the inspiring references, I've been working on my own version of the image tuscanny just shared - and tuscanny had great colors and brightness :D I'll be sharing and asking for advice later

Hi Scalene! Welcome to this forum! Looking forward to seeing your artwork.
08-07-2015, 03:58 PM
Thank you both!
Here's my take, cheap ops, roughly the size of A4. Everyone feel free to comment :D
08-07-2015, 04:18 PM
Excellent scalene, you've got the atmosphere down perfectly!
08-08-2015, 01:16 AM
Lovely work, Scalene! What brand ops do you use?
08-08-2015, 09:05 AM
@tuscanny some cheap ops, monami to be precise.
08-08-2015, 10:45 AM
The figure addition brings added interest to the scene, Christel. Nice.
I agree, scalene, that you have captured the atmosphere.

Hi  This is a WIP, on Arches 12" x 16" oil paper. Mostly Senneliers.
08-10-2015, 04:19 PM
That's looking fantastic, Joanne! Very vibrant and the colours are so clean.
08-10-2015, 10:08 PM
Hmmm, thought I had commented on the work in this thread, but maybe I'm thinking of July's challenge.
Christel - love the stones! The details look great and you really achieved the shiny look. I like your take on the tower too, and the addition of the figure and shrubs really improves the composition.
Sarah - I like your abstract, it made me think of lens flare, the sunlight reflected off a camera lens.
Scalene - you did a really nice job with the perspective of that landscape, the steps up to the tower look great.
08-11-2015, 12:24 AM
Great start, Joanne! I like the crispness of your colors.
08-11-2015, 10:40 AM
Nice, love the vibrant color...
08-12-2015, 05:38 PM
I worked on this some more today at my art class. I see I need to go back in and fix the direction of some of the wood grain. :clear:
08-13-2015, 01:00 AM
Lovely! Looking forward to seeing the final!
08-13-2015, 10:05 AM

8*8, drawing paper
C&C are welcome!

Beautiful scene! The white from the Pentels is a bit creamier and fascilitates easier blending. As You blend add more ops and use the white to lighten the chroma of the blues and yellows. The next time you could lay down a layer of white first and then add the yellows and blues before blending
08-21-2015, 10:55 AM
Thank you all!!!
I got another one, pentel on mixed medium paper. 6*5.
08-21-2015, 12:40 PM
Wow! Love it!
08-22-2015, 02:23 PM
Really beautifully done!
08-22-2015, 04:41 PM
08-26-2015, 11:21 AM
It was much harder than I thought!!! If I know earlier, I should do the sketch better and put down the first layer more carefully. Anyhow, the distance view is alright, and after a lot of modifications, I am able to get the waves. I will leave the not-perfect part for my next sea-view paintings then.
petel, 9*12 on mix medium paper
08-26-2015, 11:29 AM
I think you did a great job with the water. I really like the variation of color in it.

purpletrader - I like the vibrant colors in your abstracts, nice work.
camelwhite - your paintings are beautiful. Your landscapes look like fine oil paintings, the colors and textures are wonderful. The stones you did look very realistic.
I'm still working on my marbels, hopefully will finish it off before the end of the month. :D
