View Full Version : Galapagos Islands and sea birds
07-31-2015, 09:59 AM
August project is a two in one project. Inspired by creatures from the Galapagos islands and sea birds from around the world. There should be lots to inspire paintings and drawings.
Any style, any medium welcome. Please post your art work in this thread for us to see.
If you have good photos of seabirds or the Galapagos islands (have you been there?), please post them too.
As a challenge, which is optional, try some mixed media work.], e.g., collage elements.
I will post photos of the Galapagos next.
Tyree has some seabirds to post after that.
Anyone else who wants to post photos for us to paint please post after this.

Lovely water bird selection, Tyree. The flying egret is sensational. I have a soft spot for lapwings. My grandfather always used to point them out to me on walks when I was a kid around 8 years old!

Hey art buddies !!
Here are some interesting differences between our water birds.
1. Pegalic...live most of their lives out at sea.
2. They move to coastal area to breed or raise their young.
3. They are light on their undersides, and dark on top.
4. They have more feathers, insulation and water proofing.
5. Flexible webbed feet.
6. Sharp claws.
7. The larger birds have long slim wings, allows them to soar distances without getting tired.
8. Smaller sea birds have short wings for maneuvering at the
surface of the water.
9. They have specialized glands to be able to drink sea water and excrete salts.
1. Have long legs, pointed beaks and long pointed wings.
2. Most are migratory.
3. They wade close to shore.
4. Shore birds are small to medium size wading birds.
5. Tend to frequent wetlands and marshes.
6. They are well camouflaged for environment.
1. Found in fresh salt water on every continent except Antarctica.
2. Long skinny legs with helps them keep balance.
3. Long bills.
4. Long flexible necks.
5. May stand motionless for long periods, when moving steps are slow so as not to scare the prey.
6. Full extend their legs when flying.
So these are some interesting facts i found to tell them apart.....

Great thread June and Susan. I'm loving all the pictures and info. Wouldn't it be great to take a trip to the Galapagos Islands?
I'm sorry I have not gotten to participate yet, will try for this weekend.
Susan love your iguana.
Love the colors, love the smile and the eye. Such personality!
Impressive! My favorite ever iguana!
08-06-2015, 12:21 PM
That is one stunning iguana, Susan!! I love the sparkle of him/her!! S/he looks quite wise actually.
I haven't even managed to think about this project yet.
I want to finish off something on my drawing board before switching over to it. I have been working in crayon but I think... for this project, I may switch to watercolour....at least for 1 of my attempts.
Kind of spoilt for choice this month...lots of great photos. And then there is the question of deciding which medium to use...hopefully, my desk will be cleared by Monday 10th august, so that I can make a start!!
Bye for now.

Thanks Tyree! I will try a bird photo next...
08-19-2015, 09:54 AM
I tried the blue footed booby this morning...what a morning...so many visitors to my door...usually no-one calls. It was all sales people too!! So in the end I did this painting rather disjointedly. I will call it a study and maybe either try these birds again or maybe go on to another photo.
They are such great birds to try to paint ....with those huge blue feet.
08-19-2015, 10:06 AM
I like this very much:clap: ...the soft colours with those magnificent blue feet...and it looks like they are having a nice quiet private conversation amongst themselves....
What in the world were they selling at your door June? I didn't think people did that anymore...tyree:wave:
08-19-2015, 10:21 AM
I think there was a woman wanting a survey filled in and a couple with religious leaflets, and also a guy selling household items. I'm sure there were more. but I cant think who they were. It was a real weird day!!
08-21-2015, 02:49 PM
June, gorgeous Blue footed boobies! And adore your iguanas!
Glad you have out your watercolors!
This thread has been really great! I have enjoyed it!
08-25-2015, 12:07 PM
I am not having very good luck with painting the tern...I have tried three times with awful awful results....I don't know whether to try it in miniature form or a pencil drawing or try something else!! aarrghhh!!! I might try another lizard...tyree:wave:
08-26-2015, 04:46 PM
Its so frustrating when that happens, Tyree. I often find it happening to me... with a particular subject...sometimes it will come right eventually, Sometimes, I find I have to just give up on it.
Maybe doing a different subject will help and you can come back to the tern.
I just stumbled upon this thread...wish I had seen it sooner, as I have wonderful pix from the Galapagos and wish I had been able to share them.
And I don't have time this weekend to paint a new one, but thought I would share this blue-footed booby I did some time ago. One of my favs from my trip there.
08-30-2015, 10:27 PM
June - nice iguanas, each go is so special.
Tyree - you attempts may look more encouraging later…..but it is good you did them…….ditto what June said…… usually you will get into the zone as you keep on trying. I feel so rusty. I haven’t done anything for ages…..
BeeG - nice booby, yep there are lots of great photos here, and I’d love to see yours too, maybe we can continue this thread another month?
I ’s so glad to get something posted here:D http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/30-Aug-2015/88676-pelikan.gif http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/30-Aug-2015/88676-storks.gif …….meager offerings but offerings nonetheless.
