I would like to know the process for using Crackle over a finished Acrylic painting on stretched canvas. When I put the crackle over the finished painting, what product do I cover the crackle with in order to make fine cracks? Would using the soft gel varnish at this point make the cracks or would I leave the gel for last..... using what product in between?
Thank you.

Depends on the crackle product you are using. Some require an A and B application, while others may require a paint film. You may want to consider a few test strips using soft gel or liquid medium. Generally he thinner the top coat the finer the crazing. Play a bit with it to find the just right finish.

idylbrush,

Thank you very much for your answer, will give one small canvas a trial and error project.

You may want to try this:

Lefranc & Bourgeois Water-Based Crackling Varnish. It looks more realistic than some of the other methods.

Here is a link to a step by step, if it works.

Interesting, I haven't tried using it on a finished painting but thought about it for the painting I was doing here http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1382846

If you do use crackle paste you need to seal it with a soft gel.
