View Full Version : Contrasts (Wheatear) - X-Post from Animal & Wildlife

My latest painting of a wheatear. Acrylic on board. 15 x 15 inches. Sketched and photographed on Lundy Island.

I loved the contrasts in this picture: the softness of bird against the hardness of stone, light and shade, the living, moving creature against inanimate objects, sleek feathers against rough rocks, the permanence of rock against the fleeting life of a migrant....

Palette: Titanium White, Unbleached Titanium, Yellow Oxide, Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine, all Liquitex Heavy Body.
Tools: Short flat and filbert Isacryl brushes, fine synthetic brush for detail, various painting knives, sponge and fingers.

I like the way you have used the same colors throughout the painting, unifying it and giving the viewer all the variety of lights and darks, soft and hard edges. Plus, I really like birds :-)

High contrast always wins for me and you've done such a beautiful job with this. Very nice!

Many thanks for the kind comments everyone.

I really enjoyed painting this one. The painting knife work especially was a lot of fun.

Beautiful! I was actually wondering where the painting was, thinking that the pic provided was the reference photo! Well done.

Beautiful work. I love the bright light and the dark shadows and the fragile bird against the heavy stones.
