View Full Version : Bluebells on Beacon Hill - WIP

Went out to paint plein air in April when the bluebells were out in the oak meadows. Found a really nice spot overlooking St. Ann's Academy, the old convent school. Very lumpy ground at the top of a hillock, but I made do.

The location is virtually downtown, but I omitted a couple of tallish buildings that would have been in the background and that seemed to fight with the trees in the park and the elegant lines of the old convent school. Artistic licence, :D.

This is the studio version not the plein air sketch. Not sure it's finished quite yet as there are a couple of patches that I might play with still. What I like is that (to me at least) it has retained the freshness of the plein air version.

16 x 20 stretched canvas.

C&C welcome:

I love bluebell time and really like this Colin - and yes it does have that freshness. It's full of light and movement and I love the rhythm of the colours across the canvas.

I agree with Pips - she said what I thought!
I like the undercoat showing through too, tho' perhaps it's forming too much of a 'halo' on some trunks/branches.:)

Blown away by the colors and I really like the way you handled the church. I like the whole thing a lot.

Thank you Maureen, Pips, Michelle and Cliff! Maureen I agree that there are few red halos that are a bit overbearing.

Great ColinS, nice colors. Maybe just need the final adjustment as Maureen said, but only near the tree trunks and the lowest left. Good Job..

I like the bits of luminous colour, which make me think of bright sunlight.
