View Full Version : New Project; Birds From A To Z
05-19-2015, 10:12 PM
This Project welcomes artwork - drawings/paintings etc - on Birds from the Letter A right through to the letter Z
So to start the Project, post paintings/drawings of bird's breeds beginning with the Letter A, then we can work our way down each letter of the Alphabet e.g.
A.....African Grey Parrot or Australian Emu or any other bird which begins with the letter A
When we finish with the letter A we will then move on to the letter B and so forth.
This is meant to be a fun Project, members can enter whenever we feel like it, as it will stay open for some time. But do follow the Alphabet with a bird breed A then going on to B, then C etc. You can post as many paintings on the one letter as you wish, but when someone changes to another letter, that's the bird breed with that letter that we will post to.
We haven't had a Bird Projects for some time, so I hope you will all enjoy this one.
05-19-2015, 11:03 PM
Oh!!! I'll have to take part in this, my parents (my step-dad in particular) are very keen bird photographers, they've probably got enough photos for me to do the whole alphabet
Yes, that housework is NEVER going to get done
05-19-2015, 11:17 PM
Jess - That's great...go for it...remember it begins with the Letter A
05-20-2015, 12:27 AM
Thanks for the new project, Viv! I haven't painted an African Grey but i did paint an African Fish Eagle in oil pastels.
05-20-2015, 02:12 AM
Wow Christel - many thanks for your first post in this new Project!
A wonderful painting for "A" of an African Fish Eagle! Ive never heard of an African Fish Eagle, so that's a new bird for me - well done! I'm hoping that this new Project will bring out some new birds that lots of us dont know of, so that is already beginning....so exciting!
Thank you for beginning posting to this new Project.

Christel - Great action-painting of the African Fish Eagle
Chammi - I just love the charisma of your pen and wash paintings, this one feels like his beady eye is on me :)
05-20-2015, 06:04 AM
Lovely painting of the eagle, Chammi! The bateleur eagles are gorgeous birds!
05-21-2015, 12:04 AM
Chammi - Already a bird I've never heard of! Is he South African? I'm looking forward to meeting all these birds I didn't know of.
Beautiful work Chammi, he looks extremely regal!

05-21-2015, 10:51 AM
Lovely cardinals! Great chickadee, sparrow and ducks! The chipping sparrow is new to me.
Viv - the bateleur is a Southern Africa bird which measures 55-70cm.
05-21-2015, 04:05 PM
Looks like I posted my photo in the wrong section again, sorry! I'll get it right one day. This is an Australian Rainbow Lorikeet. It's a 10x12'' Oil on canvas. All C&C welcome http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/21-May-2015/1969108-Rainbow_Lorikeet.jpg
05-21-2015, 04:51 PM
This sure is beautiful! Does it belong in the 'A' section at the beginning of the project?
05-21-2015, 05:26 PM
I originally (wrongly) posted it in the title of the challenge which has since been rectified. I think it belongs here as it's an Australian Lorikeet (Rainbow variety). Thanks for your lovely comment. Monica

My duck in oils. I don't know what type of duck it is.
05-22-2015, 01:51 AM
Christel... Lovely duck.... It is a male mallard .... The males have the green heads, the females are a tad boring being a brown color... :-)
Kay.... I like your doves, nicely done :-)

Lovely eagle painting , Mary!
Here is an emu sketch in oil pastels.
05-22-2015, 06:56 AM
I like all your paintings of the birds . I can show my chestnut duck I have done several years ago. It's oil on stretched canvas.
05-22-2015, 07:42 AM
What a lovely collection of birds, some I haven't seen before. The Bateleur Eagle is new to me, he looks so beautifully fierce. I loved the Red Cardinal, he sure looks fluffed up against the snow, the Chipping Sparrow on the Magazine subscription was priceless, the Chestnut Duck, the soaring Eagle and the Fish Eagle are brilliant. I loved the little ducks and their Mum and the Emu is just gorgeous, you have really captured his arrogant stance Christel, woe betide anyone who has food in their hand when he's around, it wouldn't be in their hand long! Beautifully done everyone.:) Monica
05-22-2015, 09:06 AM
Brigitte - a gorgeous duck! I love the red eye and the green head.
05-22-2015, 09:51 AM
love the emu and duck!
05-22-2015, 10:08 AM
I love your male mallard and emu, Christel, both are very nicely done!
Mary, now your eagle is truly soaring above the earth, keeping close watch!
That is one handsome duck, Brigitte, who looks ready for swimming!
Here are a couple of egrets. One egret is mostly just a background shape in this commission, plus an eagle overhead that a fellow nurse ordered, 22x15 watercolor, and the line and wash is 6x6 on sketchbook paper (just sold it a few days ago):
Thanks for all the nice comments, too
05-22-2015, 11:24 AM
Kay - Both are lovely! I was hoping someone would post an egret.
05-22-2015, 01:23 PM
Kay, they are beautiful. I love the first one . I keep looking at it and finding new shapes and colours.
05-22-2015, 01:36 PM
Kay - I Iam a real fan of line and wash and your doves are great. Looking back, I really enjoyed all your bird paintings. Lots of creativity there.
Mary - little ducks in a row - nice. I so enjoyed your painting of the doves, so soft and gentle. The and eagle painting is dramatic and well done.
Monica - Fabulous , vibrant colours and the tree trunk is excellent.
Christel - Nice little duck - like the movement in the water. Do you ever sleep? The Emu is fun - like the expression.
Liebe Koksie, The colours in the head of the duck just shimmer so well. Really nice painting.
05-22-2015, 03:32 PM
All the birds are just lovely....
Someday maybe I'll be able to do WC like that... To be honest haven't really had much practice with WC need to try some.... Maybe it's because I need to try for perfection all the time ... need to loosen up.... Lol:lol:
I really like birds... :)
05-22-2015, 08:28 PM
05-22-2015, 10:04 PM

Shirl - beautiful falcon! Great background too!
05-23-2015, 11:21 AM

05-23-2015, 09:02 PM
Here's a pair of Canadian geese I photographed at Lake Ransom Canyon, TX,
Karen, to be your first one, that goose is divine!
Christel, that bird of prey is awesome  The next ones, too! Never heard of the gymnogene but am familiar with starlings...guinea fowl looks so real!
Chammi, loving all yours from the guinea family; that blue against golden yellow really rocks
Shirl, your falcon is super! Loving all the supporting background patterns and done with a limited palette, too :cat:

Here is a hamerkop in wc.
05-24-2015, 07:37 AM
05-25-2015, 05:24 AM
Another ops painting, this time of the hoephoep. Their way of flying reminds me of a butterfly.
05-25-2015, 11:51 AM
Love the colors in the heron Mary, just splendid! I've seen photos of the hamerkop and it is an amazing bird; great work here Christel! Also greatly admire your two hoephoeps; not familiar with them. Love their unusual markings!
The 'H' section would not be complete without including hummingbirds  so here are a few:

05-27-2015, 02:18 AM
Yeah! you found an ibis ! ....it's beautiful.
05-28-2015, 09:28 AM
Nice colorful ibis! While in Florida last August I photographed a flock of the white ones just walking around the street.
05-28-2015, 09:11 PM
This prompted me to paint an ibis from one of the Florida photos so I cropped one bird for a closer view. It is 5x8; Micron 01 ink, colored pencils, and watercolor on sketchbook paper, done this afternoon:
05-28-2015, 11:36 PM
Lovely work , Kay! Great combination of colors.

Beautiful watercolours in all of yours Kay. Love the hen. Also really like that pen and wash. Stunning background. I have never heard of or seen a Hooded Merganser. What a strange fellow he is!!
Christel. Really nice scarlet Ibis and I love your Hornbill - one of my favourite birds. They are so perky and unique. More gorgeous work. I can't keep up with you. You put me to shame:D
05-29-2015, 05:58 AM
Here is my Ibis painting. This was done a long time ago when I was exploring the world of watercolours. We called them Hadidas because of the noise they made . They were always in my big garden in Natal in Southern Africa. I had a little cross-breed dog called Mini. She had had a lot of Border Collie in her. I fell in love with her at the Animal Shelter and brought her home. She would try to herd all the birds into a corner. They were bigger than her and became quite used to her strange behaviour and totally ignored all her desperate herding efforts. It was so funny.
05-29-2015, 07:23 AM
Lovely painting of the sacred ibis, Chammi! I've only seen them at a distance though.
05-29-2015, 10:25 AM

Wow, folks, I turned my back and more delights popped up from your collective brushes!
Christel - your kingfishers are perfect and I like the monochrome setting; their heads resemble the kookaburras to me but bills are different. LB Roller though takes the grand prize for being most adorable. The last two of macaw and mandarin have great lines and detail
WP - Ptarmigan wc sketch is fluid and easy on the eye. Love it
Chammi - I like your stork. The marabou fits well in tall vertical format:cat:
Mary - Your work never disappoints and with these mallards following a flock of geese is amazing :D

Mary - love that busy scene. It looks as if they are coming to feed.
Kay - great macaws! The last one is cool!
06-05-2015, 04:26 AM
With all the birds I've painted, I was surprised not to find an N! I did find a reference on Nicobar pigeons from pmp though. Here is my attempt in ops.
Look at these very interesting birds at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicobar_pigeon being 40cm big and the closest to the extinct dodo.
06-05-2015, 05:51 AM
I have never heard of a Nicobar before ... It looks like a cross between a peacock and a pigeon ... will have to do a google search now :)

I am off for a week so don't have time to comment on each of these individually. Sorry about that but I am so thrilled and delighted at the commitment to this project. Beautiful paintings of birds from you all. I have really enjoyed them and I am sure there will be more to ooh and aah over when I get back.
06-20-2015, 10:35 AM
Lovely painting, Brigitte!
06-20-2015, 09:40 PM
Brigitte, your winter titmouse is such tiny perfection! Love the feel of the cold air against feathers.
Chammi, enjoy your trip!

HERE IS MY BATELEUR EAGLE
I am WOWED by your pen and wash! How fabulous. I paint and draw birds, and love combining linework with the color (be it wash or WCs).

Lovely sketch, Kay!

Love the pen and wash eagle  just superb!
The umbrella bird is too cute. Nice one, Mary!
I was going to do that one, too, but instead did a unicolor jay:

Here is a violet woodhoepoe on an aloe flower in cp. The shine in the dark feathers is awesome ranging from violet to blue.
06-29-2015, 11:33 AM
Christel, your violet birds are remarkable! I've not heard of either one. The turako resembles a buzzard.
06-29-2015, 12:35 PM
Thanks Kay. The turaco was also new to me. Here is a link to say a bit more about it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violet_turaco

Here is a waxwing in cp and wc.
07-03-2015, 06:57 AM
If there are no more w's, could we have x,y and z as wild cards where any painting can be added?
07-05-2015, 09:37 PM
Hold on, I'm just back from my trip and have waxwings to post
07-05-2015, 11:29 PM
Lovely combination, Kay!

Here is a watercolor woodpecker featured a couple years ago on one of our WDEs. It is 15x11.
07-06-2015, 12:44 PM
Lovely! I love their red 'hats'.
07-06-2015, 03:44 PM
Nice work on your Waxwing Christel. The 'eyebrows' of these birds give them quite an aggressive look.
Love those lively sketches of yours Kay. Colourful little fellow is your Woodpecker. One sees them so rarely.
Better late than never -- some (acorn) woodpeckers from my 'Bird-a-Day 2015' project:
These guys always look so surprised -- as are we humans when we find their acorn stashes!
07-07-2015, 09:22 AM
Love all these
07-08-2015, 03:34 PM
BeeG, I love your pair of 'peckers!
Here is a yellow-headed blackbird done earlier in the year, acrylics on matboard.
07-09-2015, 12:12 AM
Lovely woodpeckers BeeG!
Great blackbird, Kay! The coloring is exactly opposite to our masked weaver.
07-09-2015, 03:02 AM
BeeG Your woodpeckers are fun. They look as if they are having a serious discussion as to who has the worst headache. :D I like them.
Kay. Beautiful watercolour of the yellow-headed blackbird. I have never seen one and would certainly love to.
07-14-2015, 03:11 AM
another rare species: the zebra zparrow
07-14-2015, 09:03 AM
Nice one, Mary. I've not heard of it either.
07-15-2015, 12:07 AM
Good one, Mary!
07-15-2015, 11:33 AM
Love all these bautiful birds, some I haven't heard of before. The roosters in particular are lovely, but then again I really liked the ''hmmm'' well I liked them
all, it's hard to choose a favourite. Monica

So sorry I missed this challenge - I LOVE painting birds! Work has kept me so busy. Since you are all the way thru the alphabet, I'll ask: could I post several of the birds I've done in the past couple years? Cardinal, Seagull, Owl, Flamingo, Rooster, Hummingbird (he's recent)?
08-05-2015, 03:09 PM
I don't see why not, Pat, and will let Viv know unless she sees this first.
08-05-2015, 06:01 PM
Beautiful work throughout this thread! Love all the different species and techniques used to paint them.
Thanks for letting me post my feathered friends, too!
Here they are--- acrylics & pastel
And some my first attempts at using a palette knife.
08-05-2015, 11:53 PM
Pat - a beautiful addition to the birds. Each one of them has its own appeal. Thanks for sharing.
08-08-2015, 03:21 PM
That's an incredible line up Pat! So glad you posted them!
08-09-2015, 04:24 PM
Thank you, Kay! Glad you liked them too, Christel.
Wow, what a great thread crammed with beautiful art!
Here are some things I did throughout the years, all in WC.
08-31-2015, 03:46 PM
Joy, these are all spectacular! You have painted lots of birds! You handle the medium very well.
Thank you Kay! Those were the "best" and there were many more that were disappointing efforts. Most were done years ago, with the except of the macaw, done last week. (I was away from painting for a while, but recently retired. It is amazing you found time to paint daily as a nurse. My husband and I were podiatrists and time was an in demand commodity!)
I overwork so much, which is deadly to WC. Your website and the gallery are gorgeous; I could spend hours on it!
08-31-2015, 11:33 PM
Great paintings, Joy! Thanks for sharing.
09-01-2015, 12:08 PM
Lovely watercolors, Joy! Perfect for our fine-feathered friends' softness!
10-12-2015, 04:30 PM
Pat - what a gorgeous , colourful array of feathers.
Joy. Your birds in watercolour are absolutely stunning. I particularly like the birdhouse one. Excellent work on the wood.
