This was quite a serious occurance as quite a few ships were lost when they couldn't clear the ice fast enough. Several trawlers were lost post war due to this in the hay days of the Arctic and Icelandic fisheries.

Powerful image and a fine painting Jim - captures the essence in a glance.
My landlubbers head lurches at the surge of that sea.

Thanks Neil, got my 'Blue Nose Certificate' but never had to chip ice.

Did you mask out the area for the ice or was it painted in after?

Hi D'Arcy, painted the ship then iced it with neet Gouache White, more or less where spray would reach.

Lovely image, says it all about the frozen seas and the ice building up.
