View Full Version : Just an Apple

This is just an apple sitting on an upside down wine glass stem. Acrylics 6x8 on textured Masonite. The pic is not the best. I set up a little table top stage out of cardboard boxes and raided the fridge and cabinet.
After the texture is laid in and the base color a mix of yellow ochre and yellow came the raw umber tonal underpainting. Then came many layers of transparent glazes and the final more opaque highlights.
It seems as tho lately when I am not painting I am thinking about some new dish I want to make. I guess it makes me feel like I am painting.
Comments welcome please.

Very nice. Background compliments the apple nicely. Glass stem is well done. My only composition comment is if the apple were leaning toward the viewer a bit we would see the dimple where the stem comes out of the apple thereby adding a bit more interest. But the painting is done beautifully.

Thanks Bob, I agree with your composition comment. I got a little caught up in the technical aspects and didn't think the composition thru enough.
Also I wanted a little green in there like leaves or something.
I plan on doing a series of fruits and vegetables in this manner. We'll see what happens. Maybe a WIP also.

A really nice looking apple. I love the colour shift around the highlight with the slight orange cast - seems just right.

Just an Apple - but such a beautiful apple!
I like the way you've painted all aspects of this, so thank you for posting it - look forward to the series!:)

Thank you Charlie, lavender and ColinS,
Isn't it gratifying when peers like your work. We often don't get feedback for the hours put in.
Since I haven't tried to sell in years this is a great incentive to keep moving forward.
The 2nd in the series has started. It may take a few days before I can post it.

I want to reach into the screen and grab it for a snack! It really pops against the dark background.

Lovely painting, apple and glass.
Had a look on your website and it seems you paint excellent portraits too.

Mellybean, Margaret and Explorer. Thank you much.
Explorer, What an incredible compliment. If what I do can effect you or anyone that way, I have done my job.
My goal is to reach someone beyond the "it's pretty".
