Quick small painting finished tonight. Spring aspens. From a reference library pic. Looks better in person than my cell phone pic. Not very happy with this compared to my last couple. Dont like how the mid ground green leaves came out or the leaf shadows on the tree. Oh well. Part of the learning process. Small 6x8 canvas. Warm/Cool limited palette. Done for a church fund raiser. C&C welcome.
The reference.

What a wonderful reference. You need more darks in there.

Very pretty. It may need more darks as Doug suggested. And maybe some more yellow on the leaves.

Great job for a quick painting. I think that you do not care for the leaf patterns on the tree trunk because as Doug said you need more contrast by adding darks in order to show that the sun is bright, therefor the leaf shadows would make more sense. That and also if you put some yellow highlights on the leaves that are casting the shadows as Michelle suggested. That would bring them forward again making it the shadows make sense. Again though great job.

Thanks for the comments. I try to lay in some darks first but they dont always end up as dark as they need to be. I was struggling a bit to mix a color i liked for the tree trunks and flowers from a relative limited palette. Throw in trying to figure out what brush and how to represent what i want from the photot adds to tye challenge. But its alot of fun and something learned from every painting good or bad.

Looks promising. I agree with the suggestion about the darks, and warm up the lights. Plot out the light and dark as if they were dance partners.
