What about inspiration from the bird world! I will post a few photos from our reference library to whet your apetite, but feel free to use your own references, or those found on copyright free sites, like paintmyphoto.com/

1.Paint or draw a realistic bird
2.Used mixed media to create a bird portrait
3.Include a bird in a surrealistic type of artwork

Great job on all the birds Susan! The loving swans I hadn't seen. I love their color! Very good pencil work! And the raven is a favorite of mine. So Poe! Dark and mysterious! Awesome work on the Whooper. Same one I am working on. You really captured the spirit of this feisty bird! I love your water.

Wonderful project June…….I have been thinking seriously about studying birds, in fact yesterday I got out my Time-Life book on birds, it is sitting on my desk this very minute!!!! Thanks for the photos,

Susan - what marvelous work, with amazing versatility. The texture on the two molting? flamingos is soft and rough at the same like only feathers can be….the backkground is something i want to copy…..it creates an interesting feeling of soft mood….the birds come forward in a amazing manner…..wow. The raven is an interesting bird. I like it in the book Lilith by George MacDonald. I love this raven and doorknocker…..with the background text it could be ominious and definitely INTRIGUING. Typical swan, perky and challenging…..refreshing to look at!

Hi Traffie and Nickel -  http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/09-Apr-2015/88676-4somewhereB.gif

Here's a painting I did yesterday with a bird in it.

June, thank you for hosting this thread!
You picked out some great looking bird photography!

Robin, two pieces? You are rocking!
The first bird reminds me of a purple martin? Think it must be the color. Your second bird. I'd know that fancy bird anywhere! Awesome! I like the color in each. What media are you using? Is it ink and watercolor?

Here is my version Whooper Swan.

6" x 8" oil on canvas board

Nice work everybody. Your birds seem to be full of action and I love the writing behind your Raven, Susan.

I'm starting out with a collage I did for a friend who wanted a picture that matched her wall paper. I changed it a bit, for my own interest, making it out of paper scraps instead of painting a copy. Hoping to do more this month. I love owls.

Thanks for looking at the swan! I enjoyed painting her.

Janet, love the collage.
Neat papers made with a beautiful heart equal a grand bird for a friend.

The birds are all appearing this month!!

All the work is so varied and inspiring.

Nickel, I love the feathery feel to your swan and this makes me want to dig out my oils...I hope they are not all glued up as I haven't opened them in years!!

Robin, I love the way the birds are incorporated into a scene. Very imaginative and beautiful.

Janet, I always love your paper collage work. This delicate collage suits the bird's nature. Those trumpet flowers look terrific.

Susan lots of action going on in your swan pastel. That is so lovely. Often the best work comes from using scrap or inexpensive materials I find...as you tend to be more relaxed with cheap materials!! Not worried about the outcome.

small watercolour study of a little owl. On cheap paper so not much scrubbing out allowed:D :D

I may try a version on good paper if I get time.

This owl was on Flickr creative commons.

oh, June - that is very endearing....I like the way the background divides vertically....very nice...and what a CUTIE PIE that owl is......LOVE IT

Here is a hornbill I drew from a photo http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/17-Apr-2015/88676-hornbillhid.gif http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/17-Apr-2015/88676-cassidix.gif

Thanks, glad you liked the horned bill......No special technique.....the background is the way I use my left over globs of paint......spread on some bubble wrap and dab on a clean sheet for future background.

I did some splash and swatch on the background paper of these birds....then the masking tape around makes an interesting frame.......

I'm really enjoying birds in my work more because of this thread.......

Here is a sketch that came up as I was messing around with geometric forms...I need to clarify some of the images....... the title is Shrimp Party:lol: http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/27-Apr-2015/88676-two-birds.gif http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/27-Apr-2015/88676-shrimpWIP.gif

Note: see the alligator lurking below birds (have to pull him outta the shadows with some detailL) but I think Susan introduced me to this guy:lol:
