A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Paint but Don't Draw!
Project Leader: Alan Cross
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

This goes hand in hand with the bold and loose project....this time what I want you to do is paint anything but don't use any drawing of any kind. Just use your brushes to see what you can come up with!

Any subject is fine with me.....also any style and any medium is more than welcome.

I guess photo's won't work for this one its more of a draw with your brushes kind of thing.....

Alan

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Hi Alan
You have some beautiful bright Autumn colors in this painting.

Could you please explain how you use the knife in Watercolor...is it used to scratch lines?

Okay, I'm in..... I've actually done a little of this and I kind of like the freedom it gives. As soon as I can get my cantankerous scanner to talk to my crabby computer I'll post something!;)

Here's one I did several months ago. I was inspired by Andrew Wyeth's work and the rich colors he used in his ocean scapes. I painted this by starting in the upper left corner and working across and down to the bottom of the paper - probably the fastest painting I have ever done. 12" x 16" on strathmore.

Thanks Alan, I haven't had much experience using the knife or Gouache. When I have tried the knife the paper is either to dry leaving, dark lines, or still to wet which fills the area back in, which means I need practice :)

I posted these early this morning. Had a lot of fun playing with newly acquired M. Graham paints. Since I was just trying out the colors, I didn't bother drawing. And son of a gun, if the results weren't better than my usual. HMMM, must be a lesson in there somewhere.

Approximately 6" x 9 1/2 " I found the challenge in this was keeping the lights without using misket. I always have a difficult time with grassy areas and haven't learned a simple way of painting them. I used a 1" flat and an #8 and #6 round mostly. Comments and critiques most welcomed.

Thanks Alan, all the drawing was done with a paint brush when I very lightly layed in the shapes of the flowers. I tried to use a knife to scratch out the little stamens(?) in the centers of the flower.

Hey everyone. Great work, and a great project.

I did this plein aire today without any pencil/charcoal undersketch, which is my usual method. I'm pleased with the results, and I didn't have to worry about stray graphite muddying things up.

Thanks for creating this project! It's about time I started keeping painterly things painterly :)

Hadn't planned this for the "Paint but don't Draw" project; was just experimenting with new brand of watercolors. Then I realized I didn't draw anything first, so I figured why not submit it.

Funny how when I'm not trying too hard to accomplish anything specific, the result is often better than usual.

Nice sunny colors, good depth and like how you did the foliage trees (viewer's left) with the shadows coming across.

Thanks Alan.

Yeah, interesting how that works out.

Many years ago there was an author (last name was something like Gallway) who wrote a couple of books. I remember The Inner Game of Tennis and The Inner Game of Golf.

His basic premise (this is from my recollection of The Inner Game of Golf) and as a long-time hacker I know it's true, is that if you've played even a moderate amount of golf, your body knows how to swing the club, but you think too much and your brain gets in the way.

I think the same is often true in painting. Which is probably why the best results often come when you're not trying. It's kinda what athletes refer to as "being in the zone". No conscious thought, just go with the flow, grip it and rip it - however you want to phrase it.

I just gotta find my way back to that "zone" more often.

I didn't do anyy pencil drawing at all, just outlined the objects with paintbrush before blocking in - is that allowed?

PS It's so easy to correct & redo in Acrylics :D
I painted the fruit in with complementary colours first.

Alan (and all project participants):

I was wondering what you all think about a specific situation.

Let's say you did a painting...

1) that was in 2 complementary colors (maybe blue & orange) and you submit it to that project.

2) that was painted without any preliminary drawing (qualifying it for that project).

3) and was indeed Bold & Loose (making it a candidate for a 3rd project.

Is it considered "improper" to submit the same painting to all 3 projects for which it qualifies?

Ragtime Lil,

I'm sure someone will be able to help you. What is it you're trying to do? Are you trying to submit a painting to the project? Or are you trying to comment on a submitted painting?

When I clicked on the link in your earlier post, the page with my 3 submittals for this project came up.

Ragtimelil

I'm trying to refer to my project picture. When I click on that link, it takes me to MY picture....what is the path? I notice everyone else has an id number in the path. How do you get that? If I upload it it looks like this.....

droll13

Ragtime Lil,

I muddle thru the same process all the time.

Here's what I think might work for you (if I'm wrong, someone more experienced will be along soon):

1) I'm assuming that you've submitted a painting to a project
2) Go to the main page for that project (one way to get there is to click on the 3rd button from the left above {PROJECTS}, then click on My Projects. You'll see a list of the projects you have joined
3) Find the project where you've submitted your painting (in either Final Entries or Progress Entries , then click on the Project link in the first column.
4) Click on Browse the full list of participants, find yourself, and click on Portfolio Entries for this Project, next to your name. You should see your painting(s).
5) Next to the painting you're interested in, click on comment. This should bring up a window that lets you post a brief comment about your painting for all to see.

There may be an easier way to do this, but it's actually not as involved as it seems.

Hope this helps.

I knew I'd have some "dead" time during a long work day yesterday, so I brought my stuff and had a go at my 1st plein air.

It's harder than I thought, but I hope I learned some things for the next attempt.

This tree is actually over 5 stories tall. If I do this scene again I'll have to indicate the building behind it to give some idea of scale. Overall, I'm satisfied with this 1st outdoor attempt. I like some areas of the foliage, and the colors came out OK. This was about a 15 minute sketch.

The other sketch during my 1st plein air session yesterday. As the filename indicates, this is the building I work in.

Definitely not a finished work, and lcould be much better. But in general I'm satisfied. The composition is OK, I see some possibilities for exciting stuff in the dark windows. But I sure need practice with window reflections. Next time I think I'll have some bright sky-blue reflections among the dark areas of the windows. I also like the left-hand tree. I don't like the shrubbery - too over-worked.

I did not start out this morning with the intention of entering this project. I had purchased a large red poinsettia plant yesterday and made several attempts to sketch it in pencil, and then conte. I got lost in all the leaves and brachts, and got quite frustrated. Then I just got out my paints and on the same sketching paper I painted this directly with my 3/4 inch flat brush without drawing first.

If you have seen my floral work, you can see that I usually work from photographs, make a detailed drawing and then take days to paint, concentrating on each individual petal, so this was QUITE a departure for me. This took about 45 minutes. It looked like a good candidate for this project.

Oops! Sorry, I wasn't supposed to include the brush in the photo for this project. I guess this painting would have qualified for the "paint with one brush" and "bold and loose" projects also.

I didn't post this to the finished works because it is a practice of Alan's demo. It is done without drawing though. Used Cobalt Blue as I only had FUB and didn't want the granulation in the sky area this time. One thing I do know is that I didn't paint dark enough!

Alan is the Master, so wait and see what he says.

But I'd like to say that IMO this is very good. Sky, trees, rocks, and water are all well done.

I especially like:

1) the rosy glow in the sky
2) the darks in the treea, and the suggestion of detail there
3) the colors of the rocks and the strogn lights on them
4) terrific reflections

Thanks very much Dave. I do appreciate your very positive comments.

I'm wondering how Alan achieved that very dark sky and if it was done in one lay in or if it was glazed with several layers.

This pic probably should have been placed in a Watercolor Gallery thread rather than placed here in this project.

Hi Ann thats much better......the sky I did in one go but i do use lots of paint and all it is is practice lots of it.....when you darken your paitning what you want is the darkest parts to be right next to the lightest parts to make it have impact....dont' spread your darks out all over the place or that still doesn't work....you are doing find and yes this is the prefect spot for this painting....your refections are great....
Alan :)

Alan, thanks so much for the very helpful information. I'll do another one using more paint. You are so right about practice making a difference.

I wonder why darks are so scary to paint? I think for me, I'm afraid they will be flat/dull rather than vibrant, so I'm timid with the paint.
