View Full Version : Oil Pastel Challenge February 2015

02-01-2015, 11:10 PM
Hi everyone:clap: I'll be hosting this months challenge
This month's Oil Pastel 'Challenge' is for ALL abilities and you can experiment with new techniques if you like; just sketch or leap out of your comfort zone and try an unfamiliar subject. It's entirely up to you how you proceed, as long as 75% of your painting is completed with oil pastels.

You're free to post as you go, even if a 'WIP' to show us your process, which we love to see, or if you get stuck and need help and advice. We are all friendly and happy to help.

When you post your finished piece it's really useful if you state:
- the type of support you used including any surface prep,
-the finished size of your painting or sketch,
-the brand of Oil Pastels used
-whether you used anything under the OP as an under-painting or wash.

Other mediums may be used to compliment, but the work must be primarily Oil Pastels.

It's not mandatory, we are just a nosy bunch.

Great selection of references again this month, Christel! I'm in! Is that adorable puppy yours? Will be hard to choose just one for this challenge I think.

02-02-2015, 01:15 AM
Thanks Joanne! Yes, this is Rosy at 8 weeks old. She is a cross between rottweiler and doberman. She is a terrific help in the garden. When I pull out weeds, she flattens the rest!
The birds are black collared barbets.

Hi Christel, thanks for hosting this month's challenge. Great selection of references, I'm not sure which one to begin first!

02-02-2015, 10:55 AM
Beautiful choices, as usually!
Thanks for taking over!

Hi Christel. The pictures you captured are awesome! Cool selection of references too.

I wish I'd known you'd stepped in. I was unwell yesterday and Tatiana reminded me and I've spent the afternoon sorting out the refs with a Valentine's Day them. In fact I even have the Post open and partially uploaded ready to post.

You were a little quick off the mark.
So now I'll just have to stop what I was doing and have wasted my afternoon

02-02-2015, 01:48 PM
... I had a Valentine's them and challenge all worked out too!

Won't be relevant another month.

It would surely be courtesy to check with the scheduled host before stepping in. I was reminded yesterday but I was ill all day and told aolerana thet I'd upload today. I was doing it when she message to say someone had already done one.

02-02-2015, 02:27 PM
Oh Dearie me! My fault! It looks like it is Valentine Month this month. Sorry!

02-02-2015, 03:02 PM
I didn't even bother to finish my thread. I was still resizing my refs and looking for the RIL.

Nobody checked to see if I was still doing it except aolaranora and I told her I would be tonight it today. Nobody bothered to check with her either.

So what does everyone want me to do?

Continue and have it as an additional challenge?

Some people might not be able to manage to do 2

So what does everyone want me to do?

An unfortunate miscommunication for sure. I am new here but I am planning on doing at least one from each thread.

02-02-2015, 04:48 PM
I've contacted Pat to see what we should do and to delete my thread as it was only half finished and I can't go back and edit.

I've never let anyone down on a challenge and this is the first time I've ever been late :S

As soon as I knew I was scheduled for Feb I'd thought of the challenge

theme too.

If you want me to do it it is all ready to go.

02-02-2015, 09:35 PM

Hello Lin.

Like Eric and Tyree, I am very much interested to do at least one from each thread.

02-03-2015, 11:30 AM
It would appear that people are happy to have both sets of refs.

So we can have this one and my Valentine's Special one.

I've uploaded all the photos and the RIL images and messaged a mod to sticky and change the title of mine to Valentine's special.

02-04-2015, 01:23 AM
I'm looking forward to seeing all the different paintings!!

Hi everyone,

I love all the works posted so far!

I drew the butterfly - Mungyo and Micador brand oil pastels.
I wasn't confident in trying the background :(
Original size is A4.

Here is my go at the puppy. She looks like a puppy my grandparents had when I was a kid. :) I used a combo of Senneliers and Holbeins on a sketchpad. I hope it shows up as a decent size. I'm having sizing issues suddenly.

02-23-2015, 01:39 PM
Oh, she's adorable, Amelia! Really lovely painting of her, and I like the way you've done the grass. I'm working on the same reference. :D

02-23-2015, 03:42 PM
Thanks, Joanne! I'll be excited to see yours; you have so much talent. :-)

Thanks Christel and Tyree! Tyree, I will also love seeing what you do for the puppy. :-)

02-25-2015, 10:12 PM
Okay, here's Rosie, what a cutie! On Mi-Tientes, mostly Senneliers, with a bit of Neocolor and Holbein. Thanks for hosting, Christel, your references are awesome. I have saved the cat reference to paint soon.

02-26-2015, 01:31 AM

Lovely paintings, Christel! Great job on the portrait and I love your version of Rosie, very realistic and I really like the background, great light behind her.

02-27-2015, 08:37 PM
Tuscanny - Great landscape. I love the two figures in the foreground, especially. You did a great job on the face of the dog, and I like the background. The portrait is just EXCELLENT. I learn a lot from you.

Jeimin, - That's a beautiful landscape - I love the way you did the mountain.

Eric - Nice blending technique on the bird. The feathers look really good.

Lori - Great detail on the butterfly. It is beautiful.

Ruby - Your doggie is adorable. He looks very playful. Reads like a very young pup.

Joanne - Your doggie sure is a cutie! I'm working on the cat, too. Don't know if I'll be done by tomorrow - outside my comfort zone, but want to give it a try, anyway. If not, I'll just post it late. (*~*)

02-28-2015, 06:23 AM
Thanks Joanne and Lorigina! Portraits aren't exactly my favorite either.

02-28-2015, 04:11 PM
Thank you, Lorigina! I took it upon myself to do a completely new version of Ruby on Canson Mi Teintes paper to squeeze in at the last minute. She was such a fun reference, that I decided I wanted to do a bit more of a polished version:

02-28-2015, 11:17 PM
Aww, lovely! Beautiful shadows on the legs! I also like the grass. Great work Ruby.

02-28-2015, 11:20 PM
Ok, I think I must be living in a parallel universe lately, because I have a lot of weird things happening to me. One on this forum because I could swear on this challenge there was a post of a cardinal bird by VMRS.

I have little to none experience with oils pastels and only have tried them a couple of times, But have been wanting to try them again, so I came here at the beginning of the month and thought I downloaded one of the references. :clear:

Well At least I found it on the members library (http://www.wetcanvas.com/RefLib/showphoto.php?photo=181523&ppuser=71510)!

Here is what I did, Any recommendations are appreciated. I have lots of trouble doing fine work with the pastels, and most likely the ones I have are the cheap ones ... and I must confess I used a little white oil paint in the snow...

03-01-2015, 12:29 AM
Hi Maria! Lovely little painting of the cardinal. I really like the blue shade in the snow. The food is great too. Well done. What size is your painting and what oil pastels are you using? The chroma of the different brands are all great so it just depends on the ability to blend. To get more review you might start your own thread?

03-01-2015, 08:04 PM
Thanks Tuscany! Sorry I forgot the size is 4 x 6, and I have a plastic box of different brands. Some where given to me by a fellow artist, which are probably good quality. Some are from the hobby store, but the cheap kind for students. And I have some that are fluorescent, which I actually really like, because they are very creamy!

I am guessing the quality of the sticks is like with chalks? The more expensive the better???

03-02-2015, 12:35 AM
Hi Maria. Different op brands are different and you get to know and work a certain brand. Look at http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=183229and http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?p=20376898#post20376898
