This is my first time actually keeping a sketchbook ever. I have 3 pages done so far. It's a Strathmore Toned Tan 5.5 x 8.5 sketchbook. 50 pages.

Here is page 1.

It's a mix, but mainly will have figure studies in it as I'm learning to draw the figure.

Thanks for looking.

Welcome Darrin to Art Journals. The figure is one that needs practice. I know I struggle with it. Good start. Are you going to life drawing sessions?

Oh, the figure... One thing I shy away from. Kudos to you! Keep posting your progress. Congratulations on the commitment to keep a sketchbook!

Cool figure studies! I like the red Conte and white accents style, it's very jazzy and evocative. Keep going! If you fill this sketchbook with figures by the end you will be stunned at how easily they come and how great they look. You made a good start here with an interesting model and pose. Did you work from a live model, imagination, photos taken for sketching, a manikin, what? There are benefits to all of these.

Sorry a few of you have asked if I used a live model or a picture and I've yet to answer. I used a youtube channel called "onairvideo" that does models posing much like a live class. I haven't had a chance to take a live class as I started drawing a few weeks ago. I plan on taking a class in the next month or two after I move.

This is a little different. I'm not nearly as good with portraits/skulls as I am with figure.

More practice. I bought some charcoal pencils last night. I'm going to learn how to use those.

The internet is wonderful when you can't get to a live session. Great job on these.

Hair study is nice

Do join a life drawing class as you will learn so much more, though the YouTube thing sounds interesting. A good tutor will talk about the balance of the body and which muscles are tense and which relaxed.

You could do hand studies with your on hands in different positions too.

Love the hair study. Great idea to sketch from the youTube video!

The image is rather small. Do you want critiques on your work or not? The hair is lovely.

Sorry, if you click the link it shows a bigger image. You can critique. I need all the help I can get!

Then I will tell you that if you are going for realism, the ear on the last one is at an odd angle in relation to the head being tilted.
