This is my favorite statue at Brookgreen Gardens. "Night" by Mario Joseph Korbel in white marble, c. 1932.

Sketch is pastel on blue-gray Canson paper, approx. 8" x 12".

That's an elegant rendering. Were you thinking of doing a larger size? Maybe in paint? What came to mind when I saw your color handling here (the fairly realistic/cold marble tone with a hint of warm in the top then the richer purples in the fabric area making it look more alive) reminded me of the painting by Jean Leon Gerome of 'Pygmalion and Galatea'.
Beautiful.

Terrific....

Love the way the colours convey the coldness of the marble..

Thank you Teanne, Zotma, and PJL!

Zotma, I have thought of doing a painting of this statue, but haven't got up the courage to do it. The gift shop at the Gardens has prints of a watercolor someone did of it. Gorgeous. I'm intimidated.

The statue is so amazing to me because the marble seems to take on the softness of the flesh and the wispiness of the drapery, and makes me want to touch it to be sure it's marble!

Of course, you're not allowed to touch! :D
