Another in my Black Birds series, this time the challenge was doing the second blackbird only an inch long. Very tricky and involved erasing a catastrophic bad stroke in black onto white that was all of maybe a quarter inch long in exactly the wrong place to look like a dart piercing the bird's head. Or maybe some weird broken crest feather. Successful erasure and cleanup made this one of the weirdest and most difficult yet simplest and easiest paintings I've ever done with a bird in it. Also it breaks the line of "combine wildlife and landscape" as I've wanted to for a long time now.

Blackbird swaying in the wind! Nice Robert!

Thank you! Yes, I can just see him swaying. I used to see the red wing blackbirds perch on cattails when I was a kid and they do make them sag. But it's great nesting material and all the birds would get some.

I like this a lot, you've really conveyed a feel of winter with those blue values. Great movement in the bird and cattails.
