View Full Version : White Arabian FINISHED

01-04-2015, 12:25 PM
Good morning everyone! It's been a while since I've posted anything here, but haven't had much time to make any scratchboards until now. I'm super excited about this one, though, and I love where it's going. I was intending this to be an 11" X 14", but realized I didn't have that size, so it's now a 14" X 18" (the biggest scratchboard I've done to date). I started it yesterday and after 11 hours of working on it (yes, I know, that's a bit crazy for one day), this is where it's at today. I'm using my own refs for this one. Thanks for looking!

Pulling up a chair, wait, I can't, working on a piece, but I'll check back to see how this gorgeous piece of horseflesh progresses. It's stunning even at this point.

Beautiful start on this, Shalese. I don't know a lot about horses, but have always admired the Arabians. 14 x 18 sounds huge to me, but it will be a show stopper that large.

01-04-2015, 05:07 PM
Haha, thank you very much, Karen! Glad you like it so far. :)

Thanks a lot, Sande! Arabians are my favorite breed of horse and probably the subject I've drawn the most. I'm hoping this one makes an impact with its size.

This is glorious as is! Will the background be white or nondescript?

01-04-2015, 08:43 PM
Horses are my favorite <3 Can't wait to see how this turns out!

01-04-2015, 09:29 PM
Thank you so much, Sue! The bg will be a gradient of sorts, but yes, mostly white.

Thank you, Steph! They're my favorite too. :)

the detail and subtlety of shading already in there tells me this is going to be specatacular.

Thanks very much, Kerri! :)

Looking fantastic already, Shalese! I especially like the subtle textures in the muzzle.

White horse on white ground! What a challenge! Can't wait to see how you handle this.

01-06-2015, 07:58 PM
Thank you so much, Ann! I love those tiny nuances you can achieve with scratchboard. :)

Thanks a lot, Becky! Yes, I never seem to make it easy for myself, lol.

Here's more progress! Another 8 hours on this piece and this is what you have so far (about 19 hours total). My plan is to scratch out the horse in its entirety, go back in with some airbrush to get more depth, re-scratching, and then scratch off the white background and use the airbrush to get the gray tones I want. The final step will be to add those wisps of backlit hairs on the mane, forelock, ears, etc.

Whee Doggies! That is going to be one fine piece of art. Loving it already!

Thank you so much, Ginger! :)

A little more work! I'm so excited about the light source on this one so I'm still having fun with it. ;)

This is just stunning, Shalese! What a great artwork this is already!

01-12-2015, 02:15 AM
amazing work.

Gorgeous, and getting even better with each update!

01-12-2015, 08:30 PM
Thank you very much, Jenna, Kari, and Ann! I don't think I've ever had so much fun making a scratchboard before (and trust me, I've had plenty of fun with the ones I've done!). :)

Here's more progress. Getting very close to having the horse done (minus going back over areas with the airbrush and re-scratching).

Haven't been able to post an update for quite some time, as I've been working on three different pieces (this, an oil painting, and a drawing), and just finished one of them (the drawing). I managed to finish scratching out the horse, so now I just need to go back in with the airbrush, followed by more scratching. Then I can start on the bg. :) Also, not sure why, but I wasn't able to get the whites as white as they are in real life in Photoshop this time.

I used the white eyedropper in curves, clicked in the white area under the neck
Then I converted the image to greyscale. Is this closer to reality?

02-07-2015, 09:04 AM
Ah yes, thanks Tina! Yes, that is closer to how it looks. I'll have to remember to use the eyedropper next time. :)

02-07-2015, 04:32 PM
When you use the eyedropper in Curves, first double click on the white eyedropper and in the dialog box that comes up set the CMYK values to 2,2,2,0.
This way you won't totally wash out the brightest values. I love your Arabian scratchboard. The white guys are the hardest to do I think.

This is gorgeous! Wow, what a beautiful portrait of this majestic horse.

02-08-2015, 03:35 PM
Absolutely beautiful work Shalese.

02-08-2015, 06:27 PM
Thanks again, Tina! I'll definitely have to try that next time. :)

Thank you so much, Jenna and Lynn! Much appreciated. :)

Finally (as far as I know) finished the horse! I went back in with the airbrush and re-scratched some areas. I'm using a scalpel to scratch out the background, and managed to get my first scalpel cut! Haha, I guess I'm officially a scratchboarder now. ;)

aaah, now it is going to get really interesting, I can't wait to see how you handle it when you get to the area behind his forehead and his mane.

02-11-2015, 11:52 PM
Thank you very much, Becky! This one is a we'll-figure-it-out-when-I-get-there kind of a piece. ;)

02-13-2015, 09:43 PM
Got a bit more black scratched off! I'm using a scalpel for this part, and it actually doesn't take that long.

02-14-2015, 05:57 PM
All that black is scratched off now!! I can't believe I managed to do all that in a few hours. Now my fingers feel like they're going to fall off, but oh well! I just need to airbrush the bg tomorrow, make some adjustments on the horse, and then it'll be done. :)

02-14-2015, 07:12 PM
Love it.

Okay guys, I managed to finish this one!! Didn't expect to do that this weekend at all, so that made me quite happy. :) I'm VERY pleased with the outcome and I hope you all enjoy it as well. Thanks for following along with me!
