Happy New Year! A new year means a new thread for my WDE sketches! For my WDE sketches from previous years see my signature line below.

To start off, these are from the Jan 2 WDE (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1368939) hosted by ValriAry:

Oh, this looks like a wonderful idea! I haven't been familiar with your work up until now, but I love it.
Do you have some rules to decide how big the frames are going to be? Do you draw them first and then fill with different pictures?
Thank you :)

Are the WDE sketches the same as the scavenger hunts?
I love your technique. Do you even have to think about how you divide up the object? Or do you draw the frames first? Very cool.

Doug - thank you. I update once a week, usually.

Nick7 - thank you. I draw the frames on my pages weeks ahead of time - I draw many many pages all at once. I know that for the WDE there are usually 16 photos plus an invitation. And I make a frame for the reference - date and host. Then I just make shapes in interesting formations. I go for 18 or so on the two pages but it depends on the shapes. The "use more than one frame" came about by accident. I drew one more frame than reference photos. So I drew one that spilled into another. It was an fellow pouring Indonesian tea from a great distance and so I drew the flow across the two panes. People loved it. And so most times I draw at least one image across two panes.

pezk/patk - thank you. Scavenger Hunt sketches are items drawn from life. The WDE sketches I do are from the photos posted by the host for that weekend. Typically people do drawings or paintings. Many years ago a host gave a challenge to do thumbnail drawings of all the photos. I tried the idea and got hooked.

Do you draw the grid out before you start or during?

Do you draw the grid out before you start or during?

Grids first. Usually I grid out four or six weekends ahead. I try to have 18 boxes on a two-page spread but I'm not always lucky. It started when a WDE challenge was to draw everything as thumbnails. I then did it a few more times as a way to get to know the references and figure out which spoke to me asking to be done larger. And now ... I always do it :)

By the way I do not recommend the Sharpie Liquid Pencil (http://www.sharpie.com/enCA/Pages/sharpie-liquid-pencil.aspx) - it does not write smoothly and it does not erase well after it's been sitting for a few hours. You'll see the marks on some of my pages and this is after vigorous erasing attempts :(

Your fascinating 'frames' give me an idea....I have a small accordion journal that I was planning to use as my travel sketchbook for the next few weeks, but realized that the page count doesn't quite match the number of days...so your approach encourages me to play with frames and/or breaking up the pages with multiple images.

You have a clear talent for cats! I love the layouts, as always, but for my eye, the brighter colors seem to fight with where I want to look. How do you decide where to place the color?

The bubbles (both larger vignette bubbles and the interior 'fill' bubbles) are wonderful, as are the other textural elements.

EP, these are wonderful! I love what you did with the panther and the white lion cub in Skappy's layout, but recognized all the cats happily. All the images really. The way you do these is continually evolving, love your layouts and little color touches and clean lines.

Awesome! Love the hummingbird and of course cat! Great montage. Love the one on the 16th too and you really captured Croggers and his expression.

Nice! I love the way some disparate images intersect, the pumpkin and the handle on the pitcher or teapot are so right together. So cool a layout and combination!

It's always so interesting to see how you compose these pages! I went and looked at the source images from the WDE, and was amazed at how you abstracted some of them or cropped them to make them more 'mysterious'! Very nice line work, and great textures/patterns.

Lovely idea with all the different frames and "thumbnail" sketches :) I browsed the whole thread and it was interesting to see the colour pop in at some point -and then out again it seems, any reason for that or just going with the flow? :)
I like both colour and black/white either way!
